Portable Air Conditioner Venting Guide Australia: Check This Before You Buy
A decision-first guide to portable AC exhaust routes, window-kit fit, hose placement, drainage and installed footprint before comparing cooling capacity or features.
The decision this guide answers
Can this room support a manufacturer-compatible portable-AC exhaust installation before the shopper compares cooling capacity, heating, controls, noise, weight or price?
The short answer
For every refrigerated portable air conditioner in PIQSY's current Australian shortlist, a practical exhaust route is a hard gate.
The appliance cools the room by moving heat. That heat still has to be rejected outside through the model's exhaust system. If the intended room cannot support a manufacturer-compatible exhaust route, a larger cooling-capacity number, Wi-Fi, inverter control or a strong owner-review pool does not solve the installation problem.
Use this order before comparing models:
- Find the exhaust route to outdoors.
- Check the exact window/opening geometry against the model's supplied hardware and manual.
- Confirm the hose can reach without a forced or obstructed layout.
- Measure the installed footprint, not only the cabinet.
- Understand condensate/drainage instructions for the exact modes you will use.
- Check that the installed opening remains practical for security, weather and your property situation.
- Only then compare capacity, heating, inverter control, noise evidence, smart features, weight and price.
If step 1 fails, stop comparing portable ACs for that room.
Why a portable AC needs an exhaust route
A refrigerated portable AC has a cold side and a hot side. Cooling the room does not destroy heat; the system transfers heat and rejects it through the exhaust path.
That is why the current PIQSY shortlist uses window/exhaust hardware or manufacturer-supported ducting arrangements rather than operating as unvented room coolers.
Do not confuse this category with a fan or evaporative cooler. A fan moves air. An evaporative cooler uses water evaporation. A refrigerated portable AC uses a refrigeration cycle and needs to deal with condenser heat.
The practical buying question is therefore not merely “does it have a hose?”. It is “can this exact model exhaust outdoors from the exact room where I intend to use it?”
Hard gate 1: identify the real outdoor exhaust point
Start with the room, not the product page.
Identify the window, door opening or other installation route that the exact model's instructions support. Then check whether the appliance can sit near enough to that opening without blocking normal movement or creating an impractical hose path.
Do not plan to terminate the hot exhaust back into the same room. That conflicts with the basic heat-removal job the air conditioner is trying to perform.
PIQSY also does not recommend improvising an indoor termination into another room, enclosed cupboard or roof space. Use the installation arrangement specified by the manufacturer for the exact appliance.
If a permanent opening or property modification would be required, treat that as a separate property/permission question before purchase. PIQSY cannot determine the rules or approvals for a specific tenancy, building or strata scheme.
Hard gate 2: check the window-kit geometry
“Window kit included” is useful, but it is not proof that the kit fits every window.
Several products in the current shortlist use slider/window-panel hardware. That type of kit can be straightforward when the opening geometry matches the supplied panel and much less straightforward when it does not.
Before buying, measure the usable opening and inspect the exact manual or kit dimensions. Check:
- whether the panel/slider orientation suits the opening;
- the minimum and maximum span allowed by the exact kit;
- whether screens, locks, handles or tracks obstruct the adaptor;
- whether the exhaust outlet has clear space outside;
- whether the window can still be secured appropriately; and
- whether the installation remains weather-practical for the location.
For casement, awning or unusual windows, do not assume the rigid kit shown on a product page will fit. Confirm a manufacturer-compatible solution before purchase rather than planning to improvise after delivery.
Hard gate 3: the hose has to work in the real room
A portable AC can be on castors and still be highly constrained by its hose.
The best cabinet position is not always the position where the exhaust path works. Plan the appliance + hose + window connection as one installed system.
Avoid designing a layout that requires the hose to be crushed behind furniture, sharply kinked, heavily stretched or routed through repeated tight turns. Exact routing and extension limits are model-specific, so follow the manual for the appliance you buy rather than applying a universal hose rule.
One useful exact example is the De'Longhi PACEL110ERFWIFI, for which De'Longhi publishes a 1,200mm venting hose and 150mm hose diameter. Those dimensions are useful for PACEL110 planning; they should not be copied onto another model.
Hard gate 4: measure installed footprint, not cabinet dimensions
Portable AC product dimensions describe the cabinet. They do not describe the complete installation.
For example, PIQSY's current shortlist ranges from the compact Kogan KAWFPAC07YA at 305 × 290 × 665mm to substantially larger high-capacity units. But even the compact Kogan still needs exhaust hardware and an opening connection.
Measure:
- cabinet width and depth;
- access to the controls and filter areas described by the manual;
- hose bend/routing space;
- the window-panel area;
- nearby furniture and walking clearance;
- access to an appropriate power point; and
- any drainage path the exact mode may require.
A model can fit on paper and still fail once its exhaust system occupies the only usable walkway or furniture position.
Hard gate 5: understand condensate and drainage
Portable ACs also remove moisture from the air. How that water is handled varies by product and operating mode.
Some products in the shortlist describe self-evaporative or condensate-recycling behaviour. That can reduce routine water handling, but PIQSY does not convert those terms into a blanket “never needs drainage” promise.
Use the exact manual to check:
- drain-port position;
- whether continuous drainage is specified for a particular mode;
- what happens when the internal reservoir reaches its limit;
- whether heating or dehumidification changes drainage behaviour; and
- how the unit should be prepared for storage.
A room that passes the exhaust test can still be awkward if the only viable cabinet position makes required drainage impractical.
Reverse-cycle heating does not remove the cooling venting gate
The Midea MPPD33H and Hyundai HY13KSPACPA are the reverse-cycle options in this ten-product shortlist.
Their heating capability is important when one appliance must cover summer and winter. It does not mean you can ignore the exhaust installation required for refrigerated cooling.
If heating is a must-have, filter to reverse-cycle models first. Then still check the cooling-mode exhaust route before buying.
Capacity cannot compensate for a failed installation
The current shortlist spans 2.0kW to 4.1kW stated cooling capacity.
That range matters for heat-load matching. It does not change the thermodynamic requirement to reject heat outside.
Do not respond to a poor exhaust setup by simply buying the 4.1kW model instead of the 2.0kW model. Capacity and venting solve different problems:
- capacity asks whether the refrigeration system has appropriate cooling headroom for the room/load;
- venting asks whether the system can actually reject its heat outside as designed.
Both have to pass.
Manufacturer room-size guidance is secondary to installation feasibility
Several manufacturers publish square-metre guidance for their models. PIQSY preserves those ranges as attributed manufacturer guidance rather than converting them into one universal sizing standard.
Room area alone does not capture glazing, solar load, insulation, ceiling height, occupants or local climate.
More importantly, even a perfectly sized model is the wrong purchase if the intended room cannot support the exhaust arrangement.
So the sequence is:
venting feasibility → heat-load/capacity fit → heating requirement → noise/controls/weight → current commerce factors.
Security and weather belong in the installation decision
A portable AC window setup can change how far a window closes, how the lock engages and how exposed the opening is to weather.
PIQSY does not prescribe a universal security accessory because windows and supplied kits vary. Instead, inspect the intended installation before purchase and ask:
- Can the opening remain appropriately secured for this room?
- Does the panel leave an exposed gap that needs model-compatible sealing?
- Could rain enter around the temporary installation?
- Does the exhaust outlet have unobstructed external space?
- Will the installation be removed and reinstalled often?
If the only workable exhaust route creates a security or weather problem you cannot reasonably solve, treat the installation as failed rather than downgrading the issue to a minor inconvenience.
Rental, strata and property modifications: check your actual situation
A removable window kit and a permanent wall penetration are not the same kind of installation.
PIQSY does not determine whether a modification is permitted for a particular rental, strata scheme or building. Requirements can depend on the property, agreement, building rules and the work involved.
Before drilling, cutting, fixing permanent hardware or altering a window/security component, check the permissions and instructions that apply to your property. If you cannot obtain a permitted installation that follows the product instructions, choose a different cooling approach.
Four examples of how venting changes the product decision
These products solve different jobs, but none earns a recommendation before the room passes the venting gate.
- Kogan KAWFPAC07YA: the lightest 19kg option is attractive for movement, but it still needs an exhaust setup each time it is used for refrigerated cooling.
- Dimplex DCP35FS: the 22.5kg body and Wi-Fi make room-to-room use easier, but the hose/window arrangement still determines where it can actually operate.
- Midea MPPD33H: reverse-cycle heating broadens its seasonal role, while cooling still requires the exhaust installation.
- GentleJet: 3.7kW inverter cooling and stronger lower-bound sound-pressure evidence do not make a no-window room viable.
When a portable AC is probably the wrong category
Reconsider the category when:
- there is no manufacturer-compatible route to exhaust outdoors;
- the only opening cannot accept a practical, secure and weather-sensible installation;
- the hose would require an obviously forced or obstructed path;
- the installed cabinet + hose arrangement conflicts with the usable room layout;
- required drainage cannot be managed from the viable appliance position; or
- the property situation prevents the installation you would need.
The alternative depends on the actual problem. A professionally installed split system, a suitable window/wall unit, or a fan/air circulator can solve different needs. They should not be treated as interchangeable technologies.
The 60-second pre-purchase checklist
Before adding any portable AC to cart, confirm:
- [ ] I have a real route to exhaust outdoors.
- [ ] I know the exact window/opening type.
- [ ] I measured the usable opening, not just the full frame.
- [ ] I checked the exact model's supplied kit/manual rather than assuming universal compatibility.
- [ ] The hose can reach without a forced, crushed or obstructed layout.
- [ ] I measured the installed appliance + hose + window connection footprint.
- [ ] The opening can remain practical for security and weather.
- [ ] I understand the exact model's condensate/drainage instructions.
- [ ] Any required property modification or permission question is resolved.
- [ ] Only after those checks will I compare kW, heating, inverter control, noise, Wi-Fi, weight and current price.
