The Dyson range is easier to understand when you stop treating each new model as automatically better. Each step adds capability, but it also adds weight, complexity or a different ownership trade-off. The right tier is the first one that solves the cleaning problem you actually have.

Start here when lighter handling matters more than maximum runtime or detection technology. The governed V8 configuration includes the Motorbar de-tangling cleaner head and Hair screw tool.
Dyson V11 Advanced — 3.0kg, up to 60 minutes, 0.77L bin
Move here when you want longer whole-home runtime, a larger bin, LCD feedback and a click-in battery, but do not need Fluffy Optic hard-floor illumination.

Move here when hard-floor dust visibility and particle sensing are features you will use. The current governed record includes Fluffy Optic illumination, automatic response to detected debris and whole-machine HEPA filtration.
Dyson Gen5detect Absolute — 3.5kg, up to 70 minutes, 0.77L bin
Move here when the extra stated-runtime headroom matters enough to accept the heaviest machine of these four. The current V15 and Gen5detect records both include whole-machine HEPA, so HEPA presence alone is not a reason to step up.
V8 to V11 is mainly a runtime and capacity step
The V8's appeal is straightforward: at 2.5kg, it is the lightest Dyson in this four-model set. Its stated maximum runtime is 40 minutes, and its bin is 0.54L.
The V11 Advanced increases stated runtime to 60 minutes, bin capacity to 0.77L, and adds an LCD plus click-in battery. Listed machine weight rises to 3.0kg.
That makes the V11 a meaningful step up for larger homes or longer cleaning sessions. If your normal clean comfortably fits inside the V8's shorter-runtime tier, however, you may value the V8's lower weight more than the V11's extra headroom.
V11 to V15 is not really a runtime upgrade
Both are rated for up to 60 minutes, and their listed weights are only 0.1kg apart.
The V15 earns its place through Fluffy Optic hard-floor illumination and Piezo dust sensing. It can reveal fine dust on hard floors and use detected particle information to adjust its response automatically.
That means the V15 step-up makes most sense when you have substantial hard flooring or genuinely value visible cleaning feedback. If those features sound interesting but would rarely change how you clean, the V11 is the more rational stopping point.

V15 to Gen5detect is mainly an endurance trade-off
The Gen5detect moves to up to 70 minutes of stated runtime and 3.5kg listed machine weight, versus the V15 Detect Absolute at up to 60 minutes and 3.1kg.
Both current governed records include Fluffy Optic illumination and whole-machine HEPA filtration, so HEPA presence is not a valid reason by itself to move from V15 to Gen5detect. The defensible step-up is extra stated runtime within the flagship Detect workflow, balanced against another 0.4kg of machine weight.
The extra ten minutes of stated maximum headroom is most relevant in larger homes where you regularly approach the V15's endurance limit. The extra weight is most relevant on stairs and during above-floor cleaning.

Do not rank the range by one suction number
PIQSY does not use suction figures as the tiering logic for this guide. Dyson's current Australian V11 source itself conflicts between a 250AW marketing headline and a 200AW specifications-table figure. The governed V11 record retains the specification-table value, but this guide excludes the disputed field from Fit rather than choosing the more favourable number.
Model- and revision-specific suction headlines can also shift elsewhere in the range. Without a normalised, same-method comparison across exact configurations, a single Air Watts number is not a sound reason to move up a Dyson tier.
Which Dyson should you buy?
Choose V8 if:
- lighter handling is your priority;
- 40-minute-class stated runtime fits your normal clean;
- you want de-tangling tools without detection technology.
Choose V11 Advanced if:
- you want 60-minute-class runtime and a 0.77L bin;
- LCD feedback and a click-in battery matter;
- you do not need hard-floor illumination.
Choose V15 Detect if:
- much of your home is hard flooring;
- seeing fine dust changes how you clean;
- particle sensing and automatic response are useful to you.
Choose Gen5detect if:
- 70-minute-class stated runtime is genuinely useful;
- you want the longest-runtime Detect tier in this four-model set;
- you accept the 3.5kg listed weight.
If several of those descriptions fit, use PIQSY Match rather than assuming the newest Dyson is the right one.
