Cordless Vacuum Buying Guide: What Actually Matters?

A cordless vacuum can have more features, a longer runtime claim and a higher price and still be the worse fit for your home. Start with how you clean, not with the specification that looks largest.

The short answer: choose around seven questions

1. How much weight will you tolerate? A vacuum you avoid lifting is a poor fit regardless of power.
2. Can the battery cover your normal clean? Maximum runtime claims are useful for tiering, but they are not identical-condition guarantees.
3. What is actually on your floor? Hard-floor visibility, carpet cleaning and mixed-floor automation solve different problems.
4. Do you deal with long or pet hair? Cleaner-head design and dedicated tools matter more than generic “pet” branding.
5. How important is filtration? Treat filtration as a requirement if it matters to you, not as a tie-breaker after the purchase.
6. How much convenience hardware do you want? Flexible wands, removable batteries, self-standing designs and auto-empty docks solve different annoyances.
7. How much evidence do you need around long-term ownership? For value challengers, replacement batteries, filters, service and warranty execution deserve more weight than a single suction claim.

1. Weight changes the experience every time you clean

The current PIQSY set spans from the Dreame R10 Pure at 1.65kg through the JELLYPIG X100 at 2.86kg, while the Vistefly V15 Ultra is around 4kg and coovy SU7 Ultra is listed at 4.2kg. Between them sit Dyson and Shark options across roughly the 2.5–4.0kg range.

The floor head supports some weight during normal cleaning, so the number is not the whole story. It becomes more important on stairs, in handheld mode, when cleaning upholstery and whenever you lift the machine above floor level.

Prioritise low weight if: you have stairs, frequent spot cleans, lots of above-floor work or know that wrist/arm fatigue makes heavier stick vacuums frustrating.

2. Runtime should cover your normal clean, not win a spec contest

The broad tiers in this set are:

• 40-minute class: Dyson V8, Shark IZ102.
• 60-minute class: Dreame R10 Pure, Dyson V11 Advanced, Dyson V15 Detect, Shark Stratos.
• 70-minute-plus class: Dyson Gen5detect, Shark PowerDetect, JELLYPIG X100, Vistefly V15 Ultra and coovy SU7 Ultra.

Those figures come from each brand or marketplace listing under its own stated conditions. Do not read “70 minutes” as a promise that two vacuums will run for exactly the same time in your home.

3. Floor mix can matter more than suction numbers

If your home is predominantly hard flooring, the Dyson V15 Detect and Gen5detect stand out because their Fluffy Optic heads are designed to reveal fine dust on hard floors.

If you move constantly between surfaces and want the vacuum to react automatically, Shark Stratos uses Clean Sense IQ, while PowerDetect expands automation to dirt, edges, floor type and cleaning direction.

The three new value challengers advertise headline figures between 55kPa and 65kPa. PIQSY does not use those numbers to rank them above Dyson or Shark. Motor watts, kPa and Air Watts can be measured under different conditions and say little about cleaner-head sealing, agitation or real debris pickup by themselves.

4. Hair handling is about the floor head and tools

Several models here are built around hair management:

• Dyson V8, V11, V15 and Gen5detect: de-tangling floor heads, with Hair screw tooling on the researched configurations.
• Shark IZ102: self-cleaning brushroll designed to reduce long- and pet-hair wrap.
• Shark Stratos: self-cleaning brushroll plus a motorised pet tool.
• PowerDetect: DuoClean Detect floorhead plus pet and motorised hand tools.
• JELLYPIG X100, Vistefly V15 Ultra and coovy SU7 Ultra: anti-tangle floor-head claims that now need exact owner evidence to show how well they work after repeated use.

5. Filtration should be a requirement when it matters

The researched models use different filtration language and standards. Shark IZ102 lists washable HEPA filtration with Anti-Allergen Complete Seal. Dyson Gen5detect is explicitly positioned as a whole-machine HEPA model; the current V15 Detect Absolute page also lists HEPA filtration.

The value challengers use HEPA or multi-stage filtration wording in marketplace specifications, but that is not the same evidence as a verified whole-machine sealed system. PIQSY therefore scores them conservatively on filtration until stronger product-level evidence is available.

6. Convenience features have physical costs

MultiFLEX: Shark Stratos and PowerDetect can bend the wand for under-furniture reach and fold for storage.

Removable battery: Vistefly V15 Ultra explicitly offers battery removal/replacement flexibility. Availability and price of spare batteries still matter.

Self-standing: JELLYPIG X100 and coovy SU7 Ultra can stand without returning to a wall dock, useful if you pause frequently or cannot mount hardware.

Auto-empty: PowerDetect automatically empties into a 2L dock after cleaning. That reduces routine bin handling, but the dock occupies permanent floor space.

7. Value challengers need an ownership-evidence check

JELLYPIG, Vistefly and coovy are included because they are materially relevant to Amazon shoppers—not because Amazon sales volume proves product quality.

Before you treat a low price plus a large specification number as a bargain, check four ownership questions:

• Are replacement filters and batteries actually obtainable in Australia?
• Does the warranty have a clear local fulfilment path?
• Do owner reviews still look positive after months of battery cycles and filter cleaning?
• Are the reviews about the exact ASIN/model rather than a pooled sibling listing?
