Who it fits

Windows is the reason to buy it

Surface Pro 12 runs Windows on Snapdragon X Plus. That is fundamentally different from choosing an Android or iPadOS tablet for browsing, media or mobile apps.

If a buyer needs desktop Office workflows, Windows file management, browser extensions, enterprise software or another Windows-specific application path, the platform can outweigh many hardware comparisons. If those requirements do not exist, a lighter pure tablet may be a better fit.

The 12-inch 3:2 display favours portable productivity

Microsoft specifies a 12-inch 2196×1464 PixelSense LCD, 3:2 aspect ratio, up to 90Hz and 400 nits typical brightness.

The 3:2 shape gives useful vertical space for documents and web work without moving to a 13-inch chassis. It is not OLED, and it does not provide the 120Hz, higher-resolution workspace of the Surface Pro 13 reference.

686g is light for a Windows 2-in-1, not for a pure tablet

At 686g before keyboard, the Surface Pro 12 is meaningfully lighter than the 895g Surface Pro 13. It is still heavier than many Android and iPad alternatives.

That makes the weight advantage contextual: strong inside the Windows detachable category, less impressive if the buyer only needs consumption, note-taking or mobile apps.

The keyboard and pen are part of the real configuration decision

The tablet does not include the Surface Pro 12-inch Keyboard or Surface Slim Pen. Microsoft also does not include a power supply; the box includes a USB-C charging cable and documentation.

A buyer planning laptop-style use should evaluate the complete configuration rather than treating the bare tablet as the finished workstation.

Ports are capable, but the 13-inch model has the stronger docking story

Surface Pro 12 provides two USB-C / USB 3.2 ports with DisplayPort support. That is suitable for common displays, storage and peripherals.

The Surface Pro 13 moves to USB4 and adds Surface Connect. Buyers with repeated high-bandwidth docking, storage or peripheral needs should not treat the two models as equivalent simply because both use USB-C connectors.

ARM compatibility and battery claims both need disciplined interpretation

The Snapdragon X Plus platform is ARM-based Windows. Modern Windows applications may run natively or through Microsoft's compatibility layer, but specialised drivers, older utilities and niche enterprise software can still require verification.

Microsoft publishes up to 16 hours local video playback or 12 hours active web use under its test conditions. Those figures are useful context rather than guaranteed mixed-work runtime.

The practical implication is that the Surface should be chosen around a known Windows workload, not around a generic assumption that every Windows application behaves identically on ARM.

• Choose the iPad Air M4 when Windows desktop software is not required and a lighter tablet-first Apple workflow better matches the job.
• Choose an Android tablet when the brief is primarily media, reading, mobile apps or included-pen value rather than Windows compatibility.

If a specific specialist Windows application or driver is essential, verify it on ARM before purchase.

Buy Surface Pro 12 when full Windows capability is non-negotiable and you specifically want the smaller, lighter Surface form. Its 12-inch 3:2 display, 686g chassis, 16GB RAM and two USB-C ports make it a credible portable Windows 2-in-1.

Skip it if you expect the keyboard, pen or charger in the box, need USB4-class docking, or depend on specialised software that has not been verified for ARM Windows.

The decision is not whether Surface Pro 12 is the best tablet overall. It is whether Windows in a compact detachable form solves a problem that a lighter mobile OS tablet cannot.

That distinction is what keeps the recommendation proportionate. A buyer who needs Windows but frequently carries the tablet may value the 686g chassis every day; a buyer who does not need Windows may be accepting extra weight, separate accessories and software-compatibility checks for no practical benefit.
