Who it fits

The iPad Pro M5 makes sense when a Pro-specific capability changes your workflow, not simply because it is the highest-tier iPad. Its strongest reasons to exist are the Ultra Retina XDR Tandem OLED display, ProMotion from 10Hz to 120Hz, M5 performance, Thunderbolt/USB 4, Apple Pencil Pro support and the wider professional media-and-display workflow around them.

The Australian model we checked is MDWK4X/A — 11-inch, 256GB, Wi-Fi, Space Black, standard glass. On that configuration Apple specifies a 9-core CPU, 10-core GPU, 16-core Neural Engine, 153GB/s memory bandwidth and 12GB unified memory. It is not the 16GB/10-core-CPU configuration used by the 1TB and 2TB models.

It is best suited to professional illustration, demanding photo/video work, colour-sensitive creative workflows, high-end iPad multitasking and buyers who can point to a display, Pencil or I/O requirement that the Air does not satisfy as well.

What changes the decision

The Tandem OLED display is the clearest Pro-only reason to step up

The 11-inch iPad Pro uses Apple's Ultra Retina XDR Tandem OLED panel at 2420×1668 and 264ppi, with P3 colour, True Tone, full lamination and an antireflective coating. ProMotion adapts from 10Hz to 120Hz. Apple specifies 1,000 nits maximum SDR brightness, 1,000 nits full-screen XDR brightness and 1,600 nits peak for HDR content, with a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio.

That changes the purchase for people whose work genuinely benefits from high contrast, HDR capability, high refresh rate or a more display-led drawing and editing experience. It matters much less if the tablet is primarily for browsing, streaming, email, schoolwork and ordinary note-taking.

M5 configuration depends on storage tier

The 256GB and 512GB M5 iPad Pro models use a 9-core CPU, 10-core GPU and 12GB unified memory. Moving to 1TB or 2TB changes the hardware configuration to a 10-core CPU and 16GB unified memory. All listed M5 configurations retain the 16-core Neural Engine and 153GB/s memory bandwidth.

This distinction prevents a common specification shortcut: the 256GB reference should not inherit the 16GB-memory claim from higher-storage models. For buyers who know they need the higher memory tier or 1TB/2TB storage anyway, that configuration difference is relevant. For everyone else, it is not a reason to overspecify the device.

Pencil Pro support matters only if the Pencil workflow matters

The M5 iPad Pro supports Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C), including Apple Pencil hover. That makes it a strong fit for frequent drawing, retouching, annotation and precision input when those features form part of the actual workflow.

Neither Pencil is included with MDWK4X/A. Compatibility therefore should not be confused with bundle value. A buyer who only writes occasional notes can get Pencil capability elsewhere in the iPad range without automatically needing the Pro.

Thunderbolt is a meaningful boundary for demanding desk workflows

The USB-C connector supports Thunderbolt 3 and USB 4 up to 40Gbps, USB 3 up to 10Gbps and DisplayPort. Apple also specifies support for one external display at up to 6K at 60Hz or 5K at 120Hz.

For large media transfers, high-resolution external displays and accessory-heavy creative desks, that I/O ceiling is materially stronger than a basic tablet workflow. It still does not make iPadOS interchangeable with macOS or Windows; software requirements remain a separate hard constraint.

Standard glass and nano-texture are not interchangeable configurations

The exact 256GB reference uses standard glass. Apple's nano-texture display glass is optional only on 1TB and 2TB iPad Pro configurations.

PIQSY must not attach a nano-texture benefit, review, image or price to MDWK4X/A simply because both products belong to the M5 iPad Pro family. A buyer who specifically wants nano-texture needs an eligible higher-storage exact configuration.

Choose the exact size and connectivity around the working setup

Apple offers both 11-inch and 13-inch M5 iPad Pro models. The 11-inch Wi-Fi model weighs 444g and the 13-inch Wi-Fi model weighs 579g. The larger version gives more canvas for split-screen, drawing and timeline work; the 11-inch reference is easier to carry and hold.

Wi-Fi + Cellular family models add 5G and eSIM, but PIQSY's exact MDWK4X/A reference is Wi-Fi only. If cellular is mandatory, compare an exact cellular configuration and its own price rather than treating the Wi-Fi reference as equivalent.

Size and connectivity therefore belong in the same practical setup decision: choose the physical canvas and network configuration you will actually carry and use, not the most expensive family variant by default.

Current owner feedback for this model does not justify sweeping experience claims. The exact Australian retailer pool remains small, so PIQSY treats it as thin evidence and does not convert rating or review count into fit.

Who should choose something else

The Pro tier only makes sense when its specialist hardware solves a recurring need. If the operating system itself is wrong for the job, no amount of M5 headroom fixes that mismatch.

• Switch to the iPad Air M4 when you still want M-series performance, Apple Intelligence and Pencil Pro support but do not need Tandem OLED/ProMotion or Thunderbolt-class I/O.
• Choose the iPad A16 when the tablet is mainly for browsing, streaming, video calls, school apps, reading and mainstream note-taking rather than specialist creative or display work.
• Choose a Windows device when desktop Windows applications, plug-ins or corporate software are non-negotiable; that is a platform requirement, not a processor-speed comparison.

The wrong reason to buy the Pro is simply wanting the highest iPad tier. Its value comes from using the display, Pencil, I/O or specialist hardware that distinguishes it.

PIQSY conclusion

Buy the iPad Pro M5 when you can name the Pro capability that changes your work. The 11-inch MDWK4X/A combines an unusually capable Tandem OLED display, 10-120Hz ProMotion, M5 with 12GB unified memory, Apple Pencil Pro support and Thunderbolt/USB 4 in a 444g Wi-Fi tablet.

Do not buy it merely because you want the "best iPad" in the abstract. The 256GB reference does not include Pencil or keyboard, does not offer nano-texture glass, and is not a cellular SKU. More importantly, the iPad Air M4 already covers many high-end iPad workflows when the Pro display and I/O are not decisive.

The strongest case for the M5 iPad Pro is therefore specialist capability, not hierarchy.
