iPad Air M4 vs iPad Pro M5: Which Pro Features Change the Decision?

The decision

The iPad Air M4 already covers a large part of high-end iPad use: an M-series platform, 12GB unified memory on the exact reference, Apple Intelligence, Apple Pencil Pro support and a capable external-display workflow. The iPad Pro M5 earns the step up when Tandem OLED with ProMotion, Thunderbolt/USB 4, LiDAR or another Pro-specific capability materially changes the work.

Choose iPad Air M4 when you want substantial creative and productivity headroom without needing the Pro-specific display or I/O ceiling.

Choose iPad Pro M5 when its display, Thunderbolt workflow or specialist hardware is part of the requirement rather than simply desirable.

What changes the choice

Tandem OLED and ProMotion are the clearest Pro-only upgrade

The 11-inch Air M4 reference uses a 2360×1640 Liquid Retina IPS display at 264ppi and 500 nits, with P3 colour, full lamination and an antireflective coating.

The 11-inch Pro M5 uses Ultra Retina XDR Tandem OLED at 2420×1668 and 264ppi, with 10–120Hz ProMotion, 1,000-nit maximum SDR/full-screen XDR brightness, up to 1,600-nit peak HDR brightness and a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio.

If HDR, OLED contrast, high refresh rate or a display-led creative workflow is central, the Pro has a clear hardware reason to exist. If the display is not the constraint, the Air remains a much closer alternative than the product hierarchy suggests.

Both exact references have 12GB memory, but the chip tiers are not identical

The Air M4 reference uses M4 with an 8-core CPU, 9-core GPU and 12GB unified memory. The 256GB Pro M5 reference uses M5 with a 9-core CPU, 10-core GPU and 12GB unified memory.

Higher-storage 1TB/2TB Pro M5 models move to a 10-core CPU and 16GB unified memory, but those specifications must not be transferred to PIQSY's 256GB MDWK4X/A reference.

For many creative and multitasking workloads, both references already provide substantial headroom. The Pro becomes more compelling when the workload also uses its display, I/O or specialist hardware rather than because 12GB on the Air is somehow a low-memory configuration.

Pencil Pro support is shared, not Pro-exclusive

Both current references support Apple Pencil Pro. The Pro also supports Apple Pencil hover, while the Air provides the Pencil Pro feature set within its own supported workflow.

Neither governed reference includes a Pencil. A buyer should therefore not move to the Pro merely to gain Pencil Pro compatibility that the Air already offers.

Thunderbolt is the strongest desk-workflow boundary

The Air supports USB 3 up to 10Gbps, DisplayPort and one external display up to 6K at 60Hz.

The Pro supports Thunderbolt 3/USB 4 up to 40Gbps, USB 3 up to 10Gbps and one external display up to 6K at 60Hz or 5K at 120Hz.

Large repeated media transfers, high-bandwidth storage and demanding external-display setups give the Pro a clearer role. Buyers whose desk workflow stays comfortably inside USB 3 and 6K60 support may not benefit from the additional ceiling.

Nano-texture is not available on PIQSY's 256GB Pro reference

PIQSY's Pro reference MDWK4X/A uses standard glass. Apple limits nano-texture display glass to 1TB and 2TB M5 iPad Pro configurations.

That means a shopper wanting nano-texture is not choosing between the two exact references on this page; they are moving to a different, higher-storage Pro configuration that requires its own exact identity and commerce treatment.

The Pro is lighter despite the more advanced display

The 11-inch Air Wi-Fi model weighs 464g. The 11-inch Pro Wi-Fi model weighs 444g.

Both families also offer 13-inch models, where the larger canvas materially changes workspace and handling. PIQSY treats size as a workflow decision rather than assuming the biggest available screen is automatically superior.

Both exact references are Wi-Fi and accessories remain separate

PIQSY's MH304X/A Air and MDWK4X/A Pro references are Wi-Fi configurations. Both families have cellular variants. Neither exact reference includes Apple Pencil or Magic Keyboard.

A Wi-Fi price cannot satisfy a cellular-required Match constraint, and accessory compatibility must not be mistaken for bundle inclusion.

When iPad Air M4 is the better fit

Choose Air M4 when:

• M-series performance, Apple Intelligence and Pencil Pro already cover the core requirements;
• the laminated P3 IPS display is sufficient for the work;
• USB 3 up to 10Gbps and 6K60 external-display support meet the desk workflow;
• ProMotion, Tandem OLED, LiDAR and Thunderbolt are not hard requirements;
• you want a high-capability iPad without selecting Pro hardware simply because it is available.

When iPad Pro M5 is the better fit

Choose Pro M5 when:

• Tandem OLED, HDR capability and 10–120Hz ProMotion materially improve the visual workflow;
• Thunderbolt/USB 4 bandwidth is part of the desk or media workflow;
• Apple Pencil hover or LiDAR is relevant to the intended work;
• the lighter 11-inch Pro chassis is useful alongside those specialist capabilities;
• you can identify a Pro-specific requirement that the Air does not satisfy as well.

When neither is the obvious fit

If the requirement is Windows desktop software, neither iPad replaces a Windows device. If the intended use is mainly ordinary browsing, streaming, schoolwork and occasional notes, the iPad A16 should be considered before choosing either higher tier.

If nano-texture is mandatory, compare an eligible 1TB/2TB Pro configuration rather than assuming the 256GB Pro reference includes it.
