iPad A16 vs iPad Air M4: Which Upgrade Actually Matters?

The decision

The choice between iPad A16 and iPad Air M4 is not simply basic versus better. It is whether the Air's M4 platform, Apple Intelligence, Apple Pencil Pro, refined display treatment and faster wired/external-display workflow solve a problem you actually have.

Choose the iPad A16 when you want the current mainstream iPad for browsing, streaming, schoolwork, calls, ordinary apps and occasional accessory use.

Choose the iPad Air M4 when M-series headroom, Apple Pencil Pro, Apple Intelligence or a stronger desk/creative workflow is part of the reason you are buying the tablet.

What changes the choice

The processor gap matters only when the workload can use it

The A16 reference uses Apple's A16 with a 5-core CPU, 4-core GPU and 16-core Neural Engine. The Air M4 reference uses M4 with an 8-core CPU, 9-core GPU, 16-core Neural Engine and 12GB unified memory.

That is a substantial platform difference, but PIQSY does not translate it into an automatic Air recommendation. Everyday tablet work can remain well matched to A16. The Air becomes more relevant for heavier creative applications, demanding multitasking and buyers who want more performance headroom over a longer ownership period.

Apple Intelligence is an Air capability boundary

Apple lists Apple Intelligence on the current iPad Air M4 platform. The base A16 iPad is not an Apple Intelligence iPad.

If that capability is explicitly part of the intended workflow, the Air satisfies a requirement the A16 does not. If it is not important to the buyer, it should not outweigh more basic fit questions.

Pencil Pro is different from simply having Pencil support

The A16 supports Apple Pencil (USB-C) and Apple Pencil (1st generation). The Air M4 supports Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C).

Those additions matter more for frequent drawing, photo work and a more integrated screen surface than they do for ordinary web, video and school use. Neither device should be confused with the Tandem OLED/ProMotion proposition of iPad Pro.

Air is the stronger wired and external-display platform

The Air M4 supports USB 3 up to 10Gbps, DisplayPort and one external display up to 6K at 60Hz. The A16 is positioned as the simpler mainstream tablet platform.

That gives Air a clearer role for large file transfers, desk setups and external-display productivity. It still runs iPadOS, so Windows- or macOS-only software remains a separate constraint.

Both exact references are Wi-Fi, despite cellular family options

When iPad A16 is the better fit

Choose iPad A16 when:

• a sophisticated external-display or high-bandwidth wired workflow is not central;

When iPad Air M4 is the better fit

Choose iPad Air M4 when:

• Apple Intelligence is explicitly required;
• heavier creative apps or sustained multitasking justify M-series headroom;
• USB 3 and external-display capability materially improve the desk workflow;
• the laminated P3 display treatment matters to the work you do on the screen.

When neither is the obvious fit

If the requirement is a Tandem OLED high-refresh display, Thunderbolt or other Pro-specific iPad hardware, compare the iPad Pro M5 rather than forcing the Air to solve a Pro requirement.

If the requirement is Windows desktop software, neither iPad is the correct platform. If an included stylus or expandable microSD storage is mandatory, a Samsung or Lenovo Android tablet may fit the requirement more directly.
