What you'll actually notice

For browsing, streaming, schoolwork, video calls and ordinary apps, these two iPads overlap more than the model hierarchy suggests. The iPad A16 already gives you the current mainstream iPad experience. The iPad Air M4 becomes worth the step-up when its extra capability changes a real workflow rather than simply making the specification sheet look stronger.

The Air's important differences are the M4 platform, Apple Intelligence, Apple Pencil Pro support, a more refined laminated P3 display treatment and stronger wired/external-display capability. Those are meaningful upgrades, but they are not equally useful to every buyer.

That is why this comparison should start with tasks, not processor names. If your day is mostly Safari, streaming, documents, school portals, messaging and occasional note-taking, the base iPad can remain the more coherent choice. If you are drawing frequently, using heavier creative apps, moving large files or building a desk setup around an external display, the Air has clearer reasons to cost more.

What changes the choice

Will your workload use the M4 platform?

The iPad A16 reference uses Apple's A16 with a 5-core CPU, 4-core GPU and 16-core Neural Engine. The iPad Air M4 reference uses M4 with an 8-core CPU, 9-core GPU, 16-core Neural Engine and 12GB unified memory.

What this means: the Air has substantially more platform headroom, but the gap matters most when applications and multitasking can use it. A faster chip does not make web browsing, streaming or basic note-taking a different category of experience.

Switch when: choose Air when heavier creative work, demanding multitasking or longer-term performance headroom is part of the purchase. Stay with A16 when the normal workload remains light enough that the extra ceiling would mostly sit unused.

Is Apple Intelligence a requirement?

Apple lists Apple Intelligence on iPad Air M4. The base A16 iPad is not an Apple Intelligence iPad.

What this means: this is a real capability boundary, not a vague performance preference. If Apple Intelligence features are specifically part of your intended use, Air satisfies a requirement the A16 model does not.

Switch when: move to Air when Apple Intelligence is explicitly required. Do not treat it as a compulsory upgrade if those features are not relevant to what you actually do.

Does Pencil Pro change your work?

The A16 supports Apple Pencil (USB-C) and Apple Pencil (1st generation). Air M4 supports Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C). Neither version reviewed here includes a Pencil in the box.

What this means: Air's advantage is capability, not bundle value. Frequent artists, illustrators and annotators who specifically benefit from Pencil Pro have a stronger reason to move up. Occasional note-takers can still use a Pencil on the base iPad.

Switch when: choose Air when Pencil Pro is part of a recurring creative or annotation workflow. Stay with A16 if you only need ordinary stylus input and do not want to pay for a pen feature set you rarely use.

Will you notice the display treatment?

Both references use an 11-inch 2360×1640 Liquid Retina IPS display at 264ppi and 500 nits. Air M4 adds P3 wide colour, full lamination and an antireflective coating.

What this means: the Air's screen is more refined for frequent drawing, photo work and direct pen interaction, but it does not jump to the Tandem OLED and ProMotion class of iPad Pro.

Switch when: let the Air display matter when colour treatment, lamination and frequent pen-on-screen work are important. For ordinary web, video and school use, do not assume the shared resolution suddenly becomes inadequate on A16.

Do you need stronger desk connectivity?

Air M4 supports USB 3 up to 10Gbps, DisplayPort and one external display up to 6K at 60Hz. The A16 is the simpler mainstream iPad platform.

What this means: Air is the better fit for larger repeated file transfers, external-display productivity and a more intentional desk setup. It still runs iPadOS, so this does not turn it into a Windows or macOS laptop.

Switch when: choose Air if USB 3 bandwidth or external-display support materially improves your workflow. If you rarely plug the tablet into anything beyond charging, this capability should carry much less weight.

Are you comparing the right connectivity variant?

What this means: a family-level cellular option does not make the Wi-Fi price a valid answer for a cellular-required buyer.

Switch when: if cellular is mandatory, compare the exact cellular SKU and its price before deciding which family fits.

The practical choice

The iPad A16 is the better starting point for buyers who want a current iPad for normal tablet jobs and do not have a specific Air-only requirement. It avoids paying for headroom just because M4 exists.

The iPad Air M4 is the stronger choice when you can name the capability that changes the purchase: Apple Intelligence, Pencil Pro, heavier creative performance, laminated P3 display treatment or stronger USB/external-display support. That makes the upgrade defensible and durable even as street prices move.

If you cannot identify one of those thresholds, the A16 remains a rational choice rather than a "lesser" iPad you are expected to outgrow.

When to choose iPad A16

• Browsing, streaming, schoolwork, calls and mainstream apps are the main jobs.
• Ordinary Apple Pencil support is enough.
• Apple Intelligence is not a requirement.
• You do not need a high-bandwidth wired or external-display workflow.
• You want iPadOS without paying for unused M-series capability.

When to choose iPad Air M4

• Apple Intelligence is explicitly required.
• Pencil Pro is part of frequent drawing or annotation.
• Heavier creative apps or sustained multitasking justify M-series headroom.
• USB 3 and external-display capability matter at a desk.
• The laminated P3 display treatment is useful to the work you do.

Choose neither when

Choose neither if your hard requirement is Tandem OLED, ProMotion, Thunderbolt or other Pro-specific iPad hardware; compare iPad Pro M5 instead.

If you need Windows desktop software, neither iPad solves that platform requirement. If an included stylus or expandable microSD storage is mandatory, a suitable Android tablet may fit more directly.
