The iPad (A16) is the sensible current iPad for people who want the Apple tablet experience without buying higher-tier capabilities they may not use. The 11-inch Liquid Retina display, A16 chip, 128GB starting storage, landscape front camera and broad iPad app ecosystem cover the everyday jobs that matter most: browsing, streaming, schoolwork, video calls, light document work and casual creative use.

The Australian model we checked is MD3Y4X/A — 11-inch, 128GB, Wi-Fi, Silver. It does not include a Pencil or keyboard. The A16 model supports Apple Pencil (USB-C) and Apple Pencil (1st generation), but not Apple Pencil Pro. Magic Keyboard Folio is supported separately.

It is best suited to everyday iPad buyers, students and families who want a straightforward Apple tablet and do not have a specific M-series, Pencil Pro or desktop-software requirement.

What changes the decision

A16 is enough for the mainstream jobs — that is the point

Apple's A16 implementation uses a 5-core CPU, 4-core GPU and 16-core Neural Engine. Those specifications matter less as isolated numbers than as positioning: this is the current base iPad platform, not an attempt to compete with the M-series iPad Air or Pro on high-end creative headroom.

For web use, media, school apps, video calls, note-taking and ordinary multitasking, the A16 model is the rational place to start. If you already know your work involves sustained high-end creative applications or M-series features, stepping up can be justified — but that is a different requirement.

The display is strong for everyday use, not a premium-iPad display proposition

The 11-inch Liquid Retina IPS display is 2360×1640 at 264 ppi, with True Tone and a stated 500-nit maximum brightness. It is a capable everyday canvas for reading, streaming, school documents and casual drawing.

Display technology becomes a stronger reason to spend more only when a higher-end panel is itself part of the purchase requirement.

Pencil support and Pencil inclusion are different decisions

The A16 iPad supports Apple Pencil (USB-C) and Apple Pencil (1st generation). It does not include either Pencil in the box, and Apple Pencil Pro is not compatible.

That makes the A16 a good fit for occasional handwritten notes, markup and casual drawing when buying the accessory separately is acceptable. If a stylus must be included in the purchase, compare the complete bundle rather than the tablet alone.

The keyboard can extend it, but it is not part of the base bundle

Magic Keyboard Folio support gives the A16 iPad a route into typing and trackpad work, but the keyboard is optional.

The A16 is therefore more convincing for people who want a tablet first and may add a keyboard later. Keyboard-first buyers should compare the complete configured workflow rather than the bare tablet.

The exact Wi-Fi SKU matters when cellular is a hard requirement

Apple offers Wi-Fi + Cellular A16 iPads with 5G, but PIQSY's version reviewed here is MD3Y4X/A — 128GB, Wi-Fi, Silver.

A Wi-Fi reference price cannot satisfy a shopper who says cellular is mandatory. A cellular-required buyer needs an exact cellular SKU and its own price before Match can pass that hard requirement.

128GB as the baseline removes an old base-iPad compromise

The current A16 family starts at 128GB and is also offered in 256GB and 512GB capacities. Storage still needs to be chosen at purchase, so large offline libraries or creative files should be sized deliberately.

Who should choose something else

If Windows desktop applications are non-negotiable, skip the iPad platform rather than trying to solve a software requirement with accessories.

• Choose the Galaxy Tab S10 FE when an included S Pen, expandable storage or Samsung's tablet workflow matters more than staying inside Apple's ecosystem.
• Choose the Lenovo Idea Tab 11 when pen-in-the-box study and note-taking value matters more than iPadOS and Apple's accessory ecosystem.

The A16 should remain the default Apple starting point only while its simpler capability set actually matches the job.

Buy the iPad (A16) if you want the current mainstream iPad and your needs are genuinely mainstream. It has the right fundamentals: a sharp 11-inch display, A16 performance, 128GB starting storage, strong call/video hardware, USB-C and the option to add Pencil or keyboard capability later.

Do not choose it simply because it is the base model if you already know you need Apple Pencil Pro, Apple Intelligence, a bundled stylus/keyboard or an exact cellular configuration. Those requirements change the comparison and can justify a different product.

Its strongest case is not that it is the "best" iPad. It is that for many everyday buyers, higher-tier iPads solve problems they do not actually have.
