A robot dock does not remove maintenance. It moves maintenance from after every clean into larger, less frequent jobs.

That can be a major convenience gain when the robot runs frequently. It can also be unnecessary complexity when you mostly vacuum carpet.

Self-emptying solves one repetitive job

A self-empty dock transfers debris from the robot into a larger station container.

Q7T+ is the cleanest example in the current set: it self-empties, but it does not automatically wash or dry the mop.

For a carpet-led household that mainly wants fewer robot-bin emptying cycles, that simpler architecture can be enough.

Full-service docks add water-side automation

A full-service station can add:

  • automatic mop washing;
  • mop drying;
  • clean-water refill;
  • detergent dosing on some models;
  • more elaborate tray or roller cleaning.

That makes much more sense when wet cleaning is frequent.

Their dock functions should not be described as “hands-free”. You still manage water, waste, pads, brushes, filters and station hygiene.

More dock automation also creates more systems to maintain

When a full dock is worth prioritising

It is easier to justify when:

  • you are comfortable maintaining tanks, trays and consumables periodically.

It is harder to justify when:

  • the home is mostly carpet;
  • the robot runs occasionally;
  • station floor space is scarce;
  • you prefer simpler hardware;
  • you would rather perform small manual jobs than maintain a larger water system.

Measure the dock location, not just the robot

The robot moves around; the station stays in the room.

Check station width/depth, tank access, overhead clearance for removing lids/tanks, power access and the space the robot needs to enter/leave the dock.

A low-profile robot does not imply a compact station.

“Worth it” is about recurring workflow, not price alone

Current prices change. A durable dock recommendation should therefore ask whether the extra automation removes a chore you encounter repeatedly.

If you rarely mop, a full washing station can be feature excess. If you mop daily, the same station can change how often you touch the system.

That workflow is more durable than a temporary discount.
