Step 1: measure the real constraint

Measure available width, depth and overhead height at the location where the appliance will actually live. Treat the smallest usable dimension as a hard constraint rather than assuming the appliance described as “compact” will fit.

The four products in this guide illustrate why that matters:

  • Anko AF4002: 21.35cm wide, with a stated 3.2L maximum cooking capacity.
  • Ninja AF141: 37.7cm wide, 28.7cm deep and 26.4cm high, with a 4.7L basket.
  • Philips NA230: 30.9cm wide and 40.4cm deep, with a 6.2L single basket.

There is no single smallest product across every dimension and every cooking requirement.

If width is the hard limit

The Anko AF4002 is the clearest width-first example at 21.35cm wide. That width saving comes with a much smaller stated maximum cooking capacity of 3.2L, so the right question is whether the narrow footprint still covers the amount of food you normally cook.

Choose it when the appliance physically fitting the available width matters more than increasing batch size or adding a second cooking zone.

Do not choose it solely because it is narrow if you would repeatedly need extra batches to compensate for the smaller cooking capacity.

If depth is the hard limit

The Ninja AF141 solves a different space problem. Its 28.7cm depth is substantially shallower than the Philips NA230 and Ninja SL400 examples in this guide, even though its 37.7cm width is greater.

Its 4.7L basket keeps the workflow simple: one basket, one main cooking area. It is the more coherent small-kitchen direction when front-to-back bench space is scarce and one basket already covers the meals you expect to cook.

If cooking volume matters more than the smallest footprint

The Philips NA230 provides a 6.2L single basket in a 30.9cm-wide body. It is a useful middle ground when you want more batch space than the smaller single-basket examples but do not need independent dual-zone cooking.

Its 40.4cm depth matters. A product can be reasonably narrow and still project too far into a shallow kitchen, so the larger basket should not be treated as a free upgrade in a constrained space.

Choose the NA230 when one larger basket solves the meal-volume problem without creating a new fit problem.

If you need two zones but width is limited

The Ninja SL400 DoubleStack is the specialist case. It keeps two equal 4.75L cooking zones while reducing width to 28.6cm by stacking the drawers vertically.

The trade is depth: 48.8cm. That makes the SL400 a width-saving solution, not a universally compact one.

Choose it when all three conditions are true:

  1. you genuinely need two independently usable zones;
  2. horizontal width is the binding kitchen constraint; and
  3. the deeper stacked body works in the intended location.

Do not buy dual-zone capacity you will not use

A small kitchen makes unused appliance complexity more costly because every centimetre of bench space has to justify itself.

If most meals would fit in one basket, a larger single-basket model can be a better use of space than a two-zone appliance. Move to SL400 only when parallel cooking is a recurring requirement rather than an occasional convenience.

4. Paying a space penalty for a second zone that rarely runs independently

Dual-zone architecture should solve a recurring workflow problem. If it does not, one appropriately sized basket is the simpler small-kitchen answer.
