Air Fryer Basket Damaged? Replace the Part or the Whole Air Fryer?
Decide whether scratches, coating wear, a damaged handle or warped basket needs cleaning, an exact replacement part or a new air fryer.
The problem this guide solves
When scratches, peeling, a damaged handle or a warped air-fryer basket appear, should I keep using it, source an exact replacement part or replace the appliance?
Quick answer
Do not replace the whole air fryer just because the basket looks used.
First identify the type of damage: surface scratching, coating wear, a loose or broken handle, a warped drawer, damaged crisper plate, or a part that no longer seats correctly.
Philips says incidental scratching of its Airfryer pan or basket coating can occur and is not automatically harmful; it specifically tells owners to avoid harsh cleaning tools and insert the basket gently. That is different from a basket that is cracked, badly warped, structurally loose or unable to lock into the appliance.
The safest replacement rule is simple: source the exact model-compatible part from the manufacturer or an authorised channel when available. Do not buy a basket only because its litre capacity or dimensions look similar.
Check what is actually damaged
Light scratches or cosmetic marks
A scratch is not the same as structural failure.
Philips' current support says incidental scratches can occur from harsh cleaning tools or contact during insertion and that the materials used in its Airfryer are food-safe.
That means a small cosmetic mark alone is not evidence that the whole appliance must be discarded.
Stop the damage getting worse by switching to soft cleaning tools.
Peeling or deteriorating coating
Coating wear needs a closer look.
Check whether the issue is a small surface mark or widespread flaking.
Use the exact manufacturer's support page for the model rather than applying generic internet claims about all non-stick coatings.
Philips includes "pan or basket coating peels off" in the troubleshooting support for current models including NA230 and NA551.
If the coating is visibly deteriorating beyond cosmetic scratching, contact the manufacturer about the exact pan/basket rather than aggressively stripping the coating or continuing to scour it.
Loose or damaged handle
A handle is a structural safety component.
If the basket does not feel secure when carrying hot food, stop relying on it.
Do not repair a heat-exposed load-bearing handle with household glue.
Check whether the manufacturer supplies the drawer/basket assembly as a service part.
Warped drawer or basket
The basket should slide in, seat correctly and allow the appliance's interlocks to work as designed.
A warped drawer that rubs, does not close or leaves a visible gap is more serious than a cosmetic scratch.
Do not force it into the body.
Damaged crisper plate or divider
These are not interchangeable across every air fryer.
Ninja AF400 uses two 4.75-litre cooking baskets and two non-stick crisper plates. Philips NA551 uses a different dual-basket architecture, while NA230 is a single-basket 6.2-litre model.
Capacity numbers do not establish compatibility.
How to source the correct replacement
1. Find the exact model number
Use the rating label or the manufacturer's support page.
"Philips 2000 Series" or "Ninja Dual Zone" is not precise enough if multiple sizes and generations exist.
2. Identify the exact failed part
Is it:
- complete drawer;
- inner basket;
- crisper plate;
- divider;
- handle assembly;
- silicone/rubber insert;
- tray;
- accessory rather than a core cooking part?
A baking kit is not a replacement basket.
3. Check the manufacturer support page first
Philips current Australian support pages expose model-specific manuals, troubleshooting and a "find a spare part or accessory" route.
Ninja Australia's AF400 product page identifies the exact included baskets and crisper plates, which helps confirm the correct architecture before you source anything.
Use those model records as the compatibility baseline.
4. Match the part number, not just the measurements
Two drawers can look identical in photos and still differ in:
- rail or latch position;
- handle geometry;
- sensor/interlock engagement;
- crisper-plate feet;
- heat shielding;
- coating specification;
- steam hardware;
- depth and curvature.
Exact part/model compatibility is stronger evidence than dimensions alone.
5. Check whether replacement is economical
A basket can be worth replacing when:
- the appliance body and electronics are healthy;
- the part is officially compatible;
- the replacement cost is reasonable versus a new appliance;
- you otherwise like the air fryer.
Replacing the whole appliance can make more sense when several parts are failing, the drawer/body no longer aligns, the model is unsupported or the replacement assembly costs close to a new unit.
What about third-party baskets?
Treat them cautiously.
A part that fits physically is not automatically validated for:
- heat resistance;
- coating;
- air-flow geometry;
- latch operation;
- food contact;
- steam use;
- interlock behaviour.
PIQSY does not treat a marketplace listing that says "compatible with" as equivalent to manufacturer confirmation.
If using a third-party replacement, verify the exact model, materials and intended appliance use rather than relying on similar dimensions.
Should you replace a basket just because the coating is scratched?
Not necessarily.
Philips explicitly says incidental scratching can occur and is not harmful by itself.
That does not mean all coating damage should be ignored.
The decision changes when you see widespread deterioration, structural deformation, damaged handles, parts that no longer lock properly or a manufacturer instruction to replace the component.
Use condition and function, not anxiety about one surface mark.
Common replacement mistakes
Buying by litre capacity
A 6-litre basket from one model is not automatically compatible with another 6-litre air fryer.
Buying by brand family only
A brand can have single-basket, dual-basket, stacked, flex-basket and steam-enabled platforms.
The same logo does not mean the same drawer.
Treating accessories as service parts
Grill plates, baking tins and racks can be optional accessories.
They do not replace a damaged primary cooking drawer or basket unless the manufacturer says so.
Forcing a slightly wrong drawer
If a basket does not slide or latch naturally, stop.
Do not grind, bend or trim it to make it fit.
Trying to re-coat the basket at home
Do not apply household paint, spray coating or DIY non-stick products to a food-contact basket.
Continuing with a broken handle
Hot food makes handle failure a burn risk.
A cracked or loose load-bearing handle is a reason to stop using the basket until it is repaired or replaced correctly.
Next step
If the damage is cosmetic and the exact manufacturer says the surface remains safe, change the cleaning routine and keep monitoring it.
If the basket, drawer or handle is structurally damaged, source the exact model-compatible assembly before using it again.
If official parts are unavailable or uneconomic, replacing the whole air fryer may be the more sensible route.
For cleaning-related coating wear, use How to Clean an Air Fryer Without Damaging It.
If replacement becomes the better option, return to Air Fryers and consider basket architecture, replacement support and cleaning burden alongside cooking capacity.
