Choose the heat-delivery style before the feature list

Australian Government energy guidance describes portable electric heaters as electric resistance heaters: electrical resistance in the heating element converts electrical energy into heat. At the point of use, electric resistance heaters convert one unit of electrical energy into one unit of heat energy.

That does not mean every portable heater feels the same or costs the same in a real room. The meaningful differences are how the heat reaches you, how the thermostat controls run time, how much power is drawn, how much heat the room loses and how long the heater is used.

Start with the heat-delivery style, then compare controls and exact product evidence.

Ceramic fan heaters: forced warm air and quicker felt response

Fan heaters use convection with a fan as a key part of the design. Australian Government guidance notes that they are suited to smaller spaces, with more powerful models capable of heating whole rooms.

In this PIQSY set:

The trade-off is structural: both use fan-driven airflow. If the shopper's main problem is fan noise or forced air, moving to an oil column or fan-free panel changes the architecture more meaningfully than choosing a different ceramic feature set.

Oil columns: fan-free radiant and convective heat with thermal mass

Australian Government guidance describes oil-filled heaters as delivering radiant and convective heat. The sealed oil is heated and circulated inside the appliance; it is not burned or consumed.

Oil columns generally fit shoppers who value sustained, fan-free room heating more than a carry-first or immediate forced-air experience.

  • De'Longhi Radia S TRRS1224E.G is a 2400W, 12-fin oil heater with electronic thermostat, 24-hour timer, child lock, verified tip-over/Safety Thermostat and seven-year warranty.
  • De'Longhi Dragon5 Connect is a 2400W, 10-fin oil heater with My Comfort Hub control, remote scheduling and automatic power modulation. Current exact Australian evidence also explicitly verifies tip-over auto-off and Safety Thermostat; older PIQSY content that left those controls unresolved is now corrected.

Both are heavy — 15.59kg for Radia S and 16.82kg for Dragon5 — so they are better treated as castor-mobile, stay-in-room appliances than carry-first heaters.

Panel heaters: fan-free convection with wall-placement flexibility

Noirot 7358-7TPRO and Ausclimate ACPH915 are 2000W fan-free convection panels that can be wall mounted or used freestanding.

  • Noirot adds Wi-Fi scheduling, child lock, anti-frost mode, thermal safety cut-off and a limited-lifetime warranty. Exact-model tip-over protection remains unverified.
  • Ausclimate adds five heat settings, 24-hour timing, weekly app scheduling, Alexa/Google control and explicitly verified tip-over plus overheat protection. Its governed warranty is seven years plus three additional years with registration.

Panel format is useful when low airflow and wall placement matter together. It should not be treated as proof of better energy conversion than another resistance-heater format.

“100% efficient” does not mean “cheap to run”

The Australian Government's point-of-use statement about resistance heaters is an energy-conversion statement. It does not mean a 2400W resistance heater is cheap to operate, or that room heat loss no longer matters.

Running cost depends on input power and time used. Thermostat set point, cycling or modulation, insulation, draughts, room size and outdoor conditions determine how long the heater needs to draw power to maintain comfort.

That is why labels such as “ceramic”, “oil-filled”, “panel”, “Eco” or “inverter” should not be turned into automatic running-cost winners.

A practical decision rule

Choose ceramic/fan-driven heat when quicker felt warmth and shorter sessions matter and fan airflow is acceptable.

Choose an oil column when you want sustained fan-free heat and the heater can mostly stay in one room. Then choose Radia S for local digital scheduling or Dragon5 for app-based scheduling.

Choose a fan-free panel when wall placement and low-airflow heat matter together. Then choose Noirot or Ausclimate based on exact control, warranty and safety requirements.

Only after choosing the architecture should wattage, thermostat workflow, verified safety controls, dimensions and warranty narrow the exact model.
