Decision reasoning

Why the choice changes.

The practical choice

Choose the De'Longhi Eletta Explore ECAM450.55.G when your priority is one-touch bean-to-cup convenience, automatic hot and cold milk and saved profiles with minimal involvement in puck preparation.

Choose the Breville Oracle Jet BES985 when you specifically want an automated 58 mm portafilter workflow with automatic grind, dose and tamp, Auto MilQ and dedicated Cold Espresso / Cold Brew programs.

These machines solve different versions of “automation”. Eletta hides more of the brewing process inside an automatic brew group. Oracle Jet automates more steps around a real portafilter.

Brewing architecture should decide the shortlist first

Eletta Explore is a conventional automatic bean-to-cup machine. Beans are ground internally, coffee is brewed through the machine's internal system and the user selects drinks through the interface.

Oracle Jet uses a 58 mm portafilter with a 22 g stated dose and automatically manages grind, dose and tamp before the user locks the portafilter into the group.

That means Oracle Jet still exposes the espresso pathway. The user handles the portafilter and puck after each drink. Eletta removes more of that handling from the routine.

Neither architecture is universally superior. The correct choice depends on whether portafilter involvement is something you value or something you want the machine to eliminate.

Eletta is the easier complete-drink machine

The exact ECAM450.55.G combines LatteCrema Hot and LatteCrema Cool, a 3.5-inch display, four user profiles and a To-Go workflow.

That makes it especially coherent in a shared household where different people want repeatable hot or iced milk drinks without learning grinding, dosing or steaming.

The limitation is important: this exact .55.G does not have the true Cold Brew program of higher Eletta Explore variants. Automatic cold milk and iced-drink workflows are not the same claim as cold-brew extraction.

Oracle Jet automates puck preparation instead of hiding it

Oracle Jet combines a built-in grinder with 45 grind settings, automatic grind/dose/tamp and a 58 mm portafilter.

That gives the buyer more visibility into a traditional espresso format while removing much of the repetitive puck-preparation work.

If the user specifically wants to stay close to a portafilter workflow without manually weighing, dosing and tamping each shot, this architecture is the reason to consider Oracle Jet. If portafilter handling itself feels unnecessary, Eletta is the cleaner solution.

Both automate milk, but their cold capabilities differ

Eletta uses LatteCrema Hot and Cool for automatic milk preparation. Oracle Jet uses Auto MilQ for hands-free milk texturing.

Oracle Jet also has dedicated Cold Espresso and Cold Brew programs. Eletta .55.G has automatic cold milk and iced workflows but not the same true Cold Brew program.

That distinction matters only when cold extraction is genuinely used. A household that mainly drinks hot flat whites should not rank Oracle Jet higher simply because it lists true cold programs.

Profiles versus preparation guidance

Eletta Explore provides four saved user profiles. That is useful for a shared machine where several people want personalised drinks with minimal adjustment.

Oracle Jet's value is different. Its touchscreen guidance is built around the preparation process rather than a conventional multi-profile bean-to-cup model.

If repeated personalised one-touch drinks are the priority, Eletta's profiles are more directly aligned. If the goal is a guided portafilter experience, Oracle Jet's preparation system is more relevant.

Footprint is a width-versus-depth trade

Eletta Explore measures 26.2 W × 48.5 D × 39 H cm.

Oracle Jet measures 36.8 W × 38.1 D × 42.5 H cm.

Eletta is much narrower but substantially deeper. Oracle Jet is wider and taller but roughly 10 cm shallower.

A shallow bench can therefore favour Oracle Jet even though it is the larger-looking machine overall. A narrow appliance bay may favour Eletta. Measure the exact W × D × H plus top/front service clearance.

Water and bean capacity favour Oracle Jet on paper

Eletta uses a 1.8 L water tank and 300 g hopper.

Oracle Jet uses a 2.3 L water tank and 340 g hopper.

Those capacity differences can reduce refill frequency in a high-use household, but they do not establish coffee quality. They matter most when making several drinks back-to-back.

Cleaning follows the architecture

Eletta automates more of the brew path but needs normal automatic-machine care: milk-system cleaning, rinsing, grounds-container/drip-tray maintenance, water-system care and descaling.

Oracle Jet adds the physical portafilter, basket and group-area cleanup to grinder and milk maintenance. Automation reduces dosing/tamping effort; it does not eliminate puck disposal or portafilter cleaning.

When each product is the better fit

Choose Eletta Explore if

  • one-touch bean-to-cup drinks are the goal;
  • automatic hot and cold milk are important;
  • saved profiles matter in a shared household;
  • you want to minimise portafilter handling;
  • the 48.5 cm depth fits your bench.

Choose Oracle Jet if

  • you specifically want a 58 mm portafilter architecture;
  • automatic grind, dose and tamp are valuable;
  • Auto MilQ is appealing;
  • true Cold Espresso / Cold Brew programs matter;
  • the wider 36.8 cm body fits more easily than Eletta's depth.

PIQSY conclusion

Eletta Explore is the better fit for convenience-first households. Oracle Jet is the better fit for buyers who still want a portafilter-based espresso architecture but want most preparation automated.

Do not treat Oracle Jet as a straightforward “upgrade” from Eletta. Moving between them changes the brewing workflow, not just the feature count.
