PIQSY Compare
Breville Dual Boiler vs Oracle Jet: Manual 58mm Control or Automated 58mm Espresso?
Compare Breville Dual Boiler BES920 and Oracle Jet BES985 on 58mm portafilter architecture, grinder ownership, puck preparation, milk workflow, simultaneous brew/steam and daily involvement.
The decision
Should I choose Dual Boiler for separate-grinder manual 58mm control and simultaneous brew/steam, or Oracle Jet for automated 58mm puck preparation and milk?

Decision reasoning
Why the choice changes.
The practical choice
Choose the Breville Dual Boiler BES920BSS when you want a manual 58 mm espresso platform, already own or want to choose a separate grinder, and value PID control plus simultaneous brewing and steaming.
Choose the Breville Oracle Jet BES985 when you want to keep a 58 mm portafilter but want the machine to automate grinding, dosing, tamping and milk texturing.
Both live in the 58 mm Breville espresso world. The decision is therefore not portafilter size—it is manual control versus preparation automation.
The shared 58 mm format hides a major workflow split
Dual Boiler uses a 58 mm portafilter with Breville's stated 22 g dose, but leaves grinding, dosing, tamping, extraction decisions and milk texturing to the user.
Oracle Jet also uses a 58 mm portafilter with a 22 g stated dose, but adds an integrated grinder and automatic grind, dose and tamp.
That makes this a particularly clean decision. If you enjoy building the puck yourself, Dual Boiler preserves that control. If puck preparation feels repetitive, Oracle Jet exists to remove more of it.
Dual Boiler requires a separate grinder by design
BES920 has no integrated grinder.
That is not a missing feature for its intended user; it is part of the enthusiast architecture. You can choose a grinder independently, upgrade it later and control the pairing yourself.
The cost is a larger total system. Budget, bench space and maintenance must include the grinder rather than treating the espresso machine as the complete setup.
Oracle Jet integrates a grinder with 45 settings, reducing appliance sprawl and removing the separate-grinder decision.
Dual boilers matter when you use the throughput they enable
Dual Boiler uses separate espresso and steam boilers with PID temperature control and can extract espresso and steam milk at the same time.
That is especially useful for repeated milk drinks because brewing and steaming do not have to wait on the same heating system.
PIQSY does not turn “dual boiler” into an automatic quality score. If you usually make one black coffee at a time, simultaneous brew/steam capability may be far less important than it sounds on a specification sheet.
Oracle Jet removes milk technique as well as puck prep
Dual Boiler uses a manual steam wand.
Oracle Jet uses Auto MilQ for hands-free milk texturing.
That can be the decisive difference for a household that wants café-style involvement on the coffee side but does not want to learn milk texture—or wants consistency across several users.
For an enthusiast who enjoys manual steaming, Auto MilQ may be unnecessary automation.
Oracle Jet adds genuine cold programs
Oracle Jet supports Cold Espresso and Cold Brew programs.
Dual Boiler's canonical record does not include dedicated cold-extraction programs.
Again, this matters only if cold coffee is part of the regular routine. It should not move Oracle Jet ahead for a hot-espresso household merely because the feature exists.
Machine dimensions are similar—until the grinder is added
Dual Boiler measures 37.9 W × 40.3 D × 37.1 H cm.
Oracle Jet measures 36.8 W × 38.1 D × 42.5 H cm.
The machines themselves are close in width and depth. Oracle Jet is taller.
The real footprint difference appears when Dual Boiler's separate grinder is included. A grinder adds bench width, hopper clearance and another power point. For a tight kitchen, that complete-system measurement matters more than comparing the two espresso-machine bodies alone.
Cleaning differs in complexity, not existence
Dual Boiler requires grinder maintenance on the separate grinder, portafilter and basket cleaning, group-area care, manual steam-wand wiping/purging, drip-tray care and descaling.
Oracle Jet concentrates grinder and espresso functions in one appliance and automates milk, but it still requires portafilter/basket cleaning, puck disposal, group care, grinder/hopper maintenance, Auto MilQ care and water-system maintenance.
Automation reduces manual preparation; it does not remove ownership maintenance.
When each product is the better fit
Choose Dual Boiler if
- manual espresso control is a feature you want to use;
- you already own or want to choose a separate grinder;
- simultaneous brew and steam matters for repeated milk drinks;
- manual milk is desirable;
- modular equipment and upgrade flexibility matter more than one-box convenience.
Choose Oracle Jet if
- automatic grind, dose and tamp are important;
- Auto MilQ is valuable;
- you want a 58 mm portafilter without doing most puck preparation yourself;
- dedicated Cold Brew / Cold Espresso are recurring use cases;
- one integrated appliance is easier than a machine-plus-grinder setup.
PIQSY conclusion
Dual Boiler is the enthusiast route. Oracle Jet is the automation route.
Choose Dual Boiler when manual control and a separate grinder are the point of the setup. Choose Oracle Jet when you want the physical 58 mm portafilter architecture but want the machine to handle most of the repeatable preparation work.
If you want true one-touch bean-to-cup coffee with no portafilter handling, neither is the most coherent architecture.
