Is a Steam Air Fryer Worth It? The Question to Ask Before Paying for Steam

A practical decision guide to steam air fryers using the Philips NA551 and NA352 to isolate when steam capability adds real value.

The decision this guide answers

When does steam capability materially improve an air-fryer decision, and when is it simply extra complexity I am unlikely to use?

The short answer

A steam air fryer is worth prioritising only when steam-specific functions would change how you actually cook.

The Philips NA551 is a useful case because it shares the same 9L, 6L + 3L dual-basket architecture as the Philips NA352, then adds Steam, Steam + Air Fry and Steam Clean.

That lets you isolate the real question:

Do you need steam, or do you simply need a good 6L + 3L dual-basket air fryer?

First make sure the basket layout is right

Both the NA352 and NA551 use the same larger-main/smaller-side decision shape: 6L + 3L.

That means the steam question comes second. If you really need two equally large zones, one large uninterrupted cooking area or a much smaller single basket, choosing NA551 for steam does not solve the underlying architecture mismatch.

Start by asking whether a 6L main basket plus a 3L side basket fits the meals you normally cook. If it does not, choose the right basket architecture before considering steam.

What the NA551 actually adds

The current governed Philips record supports three steam-specific functions:

  • Steam
  • Steam + Air Fry
  • Steam Clean

PIQSY treats those as additional cooking and maintenance capabilities. It does not infer from their presence that the NA551 automatically produces better food than a conventional air fryer.

The NA352 remains the useful baseline because it already provides the same 9L 6L + 3L dual-basket format and Sync Finish without a governed steam function.

Steam should carry meaningful decision weight when

Steam is part of meals you already cook

If moist-heat cooking is already part of your routine, an integrated Steam mode can represent a genuine workflow capability rather than an experimental extra.

Foods such as vegetables, fish or dumplings can be useful prompts when thinking through your own routine, but PIQSY's recommendation does not depend on claiming a specific performance advantage for those foods.

You can name recurring uses for Steam + Air Fry

The combined mode matters only if you expect to use that combination repeatedly. A function that sounds interesting but would rarely be selected should have low weight in the purchase decision.

Steam Clean changes your maintenance routine

Steam Clean is a verified NA551 function. Whether it is valuable depends on whether you expect to use it as part of your normal cleaning workflow rather than treating it as another button on the control panel.

Steam should carry low decision weight when

Your main need is simply two-zone air frying

If the actual requirement is a 6L main basket plus a 3L side basket with coordinated dual-zone cooking, the NA352 already represents that architecture.

In that case, steam should not become the default reason to move to NA551 unless the steam-specific modes solve an additional recurring need.

Most of your cooking would ignore the steam modes

A longer function list is not the same as a better fit. If you expect to use ordinary air-frying modes almost all of the time, the steam capability may add little to the household decision.

Simpler operation matters more than optional methods

Additional capability can also mean additional choices. If the household values a simpler air-fryer workflow and does not have a clear use for steam, the non-steam baseline can be the more coherent decision.

The five-meal test

Think about the last five meals you would realistically have cooked in an air fryer.

For each meal, ask:

  1. Would the 6L + 3L basket split have suited the portions?
  2. Would Steam have been selected deliberately?
  3. Would Steam + Air Fry have changed the method you chose?
  4. Would Steam Clean have been used afterwards?

If steam-specific capability changes several real examples, it deserves meaningful weight.

If none of those meals would have used steam, then the NA551's additional functions are not solving a demonstrated problem yet.

What steam capability does not prove

The presence of Steam, Steam + Air Fry and Steam Clean does not by itself prove:

  • better crisping;
  • better taste;
  • better moisture retention;
  • better nutrition;
  • faster cooking; or
  • better overall value.

Those outcomes require their own evidence. PIQSY therefore keeps the recommendation on the verified capability itself and the shopper's intended use of it.

NA352 or NA551?

Choose Philips NA352 when

  • the 6L + 3L main-and-side format suits your meals;
  • ordinary dual-zone air frying is the real requirement; and
  • you cannot identify recurring steam-specific use cases.

Choose Philips NA551 when

  • the same 6L + 3L format already suits your meals; and
  • Steam, Steam + Air Fry or Steam Clean would be used meaningfully in normal household routines.

PIQSY steam decision rule

Do not treat steam as an automatic premium upgrade.

First choose the right basket architecture. Then ask whether the steam-specific modes would change several meals or maintenance tasks you actually perform. If the answer is yes, steam is a meaningful capability. If the answer is no, give it little weight and choose from the underlying air-fryer format instead.
