How to Descale a Coffee Machine: What Changes by Model
Descaling removes mineral scale, but the cycle, solution and timing vary by coffee machine. See what changes for Breville, De'Longhi, Nespresso and Ninja.
The problem this guide solves
How do I remove mineral scale from my coffee machine using the correct model-specific cycle, descaler and timing without confusing descaling with ordinary coffee or milk-system cleaning?
Quick answer
Descaling removes mineral scale from the water system. It is not the same job as cleaning coffee oils from the brew path, washing a milk system or emptying a drip tray.
Start by identifying the exact model and checking whether it has a dedicated descale program. Use the descaler, water-filter instructions and rinse sequence specified for that machine rather than copying a generic recipe from another brand.
That distinction matters because current Australian machines handle the same mineral problem in different ways. A Breville Dual Boiler has a materially different procedure from a Bambino Plus, Nespresso Original and Vertuo machines use different controls, and De'Longhi ties many descale prompts to the machine's water-hardness setting.
Is cleaning the same as descaling?
No.
Cleaning usually deals with coffee oils, grounds, milk residue and removable parts. Descaling deals with minerals left behind as water moves through the machine.
Some machines make the distinction very obvious. The Breville Barista Express Impress has separate cleaning and descale functions, and its manual explains that the cleaning cycle targets coffee oils while descaling targets mineral build-up.
Nespresso Creatista Plus also separates milk-system cleaning from descaling. De'Longhi treats limescale, milk residue and general machine cleaning as different maintenance jobs.
If your machine is showing a maintenance alert, confirm which job it is asking for before you add anything to the water tank.
How often should you descale?
There is no useful one-size-fits-all calendar.
Nespresso Australia says the Essenza Mini can be descaled once a year in soft-water areas and twice a year in hard-water areas. Its Vertuo Pop guidance uses a broader 6-12 month interval.
De'Longhi takes a different approach on many machines: the descale reminder is influenced by how much water the machine has used and the water-hardness setting. That makes the setup of the hardness level part of the maintenance system rather than a minor preference.
Many current machines simply tell you when a descale cycle is due. When your exact model has a built-in prompt, use that prompt and the current manufacturer procedure instead of forcing a generic monthly schedule onto it.
Check water hardness before assuming the machine is asking too often
A machine can only make a sensible descale estimate if its hardness setting matches the water you actually use.
De'Longhi specifically tells owners to perform the supplied hardness test and set the machine accordingly. Ninja's Australian Luxe Café Premier package also includes a hard-water test kit.
If a machine is set for harder water than you use, it may ask for descaling more frequently. If it is set too soft, the reminder can arrive later than intended.
Use the supplied test method where the manufacturer provides one. Do not guess from taste, postcode or another household's setting.
Which descaler should you use?
The simplest rule is to use the product approved for the exact machine.
Nespresso Australia explicitly says never use vinegar because it can damage the machine. Its current descaling kit is listed as compatible with Essenza Mini, Creatista Plus and Vertuo Pop.
De'Longhi recommends its own descaling solution and warns that an unsuitable descaler or an incorrectly completed process can lead to faults that may not be covered by the manufacturer's guarantee.
Breville's current manuals specify dedicated descaling powder or solution for the relevant machines. For the Barista Express Impress, the manual also tells the owner to remove the water filter before adding the descaling solution.
The useful general rule is not a universal acid ratio. It is to let the exact machine instructions decide what goes into the tank and how the cycle is run.
What changes between Breville models?
Breville is a good example of why one brand does not mean one procedure.
Bambino Plus
The Bambino Plus BES500 manual uses a dedicated descale mode. The tank is filled to the marked DESCALE line, the machine runs its programmed cycle, and the process includes a fresh-water rinse stage.
That is different from simply running descaling solution through normal espresso shots.
Barista Express Impress
The Barista Express Impress BES876 manual clearly separates cleaning from descaling. It instructs the owner to remove the water filter, dissolve the specified descaling powder and enter the model's dedicated descale mode.
This is especially useful when the CLEAN / DESCALE indicator is confusing: first work out which maintenance task the machine is actually requesting.
Dual Boiler
The Dual Boiler BES920 manual has a much more involved process. It includes cooling the machine, entering descale mode and draining the boilers through the descale access points.
That is the clearest reason not to apply a generic "run descaler through the brew cycle" method across every Breville machine.
Touchscreen and guided Breville machines
For machines such as Barista Touch Impress and Oracle Jet, use the current on-machine guidance and Breville support material for that exact model. The benefit of the guided interface is that you do not need to memorise a button sequence from another product.
What changes between Nespresso machines?
Nespresso uses one descaling product across many machines, but the controls and timing still differ.
Essenza Mini
Nespresso Australia's Essenza Mini guidance ties descaling frequency to water hardness: once a year for soft water and twice a year for hard water.
Nespresso also lists slower-than-normal coffee flow as one sign that descaling may be needed.
Vertuo Pop
Nespresso Australia's Vertuo Pop guidance recommends descaling every 6-12 months.
Vertuo Pop uses a different control system from an Original-line Essenza Mini, so do not transfer the Essenza button sequence to a Vertuo machine.
Creatista Plus
Nespresso says Creatista Plus should be descaled when the alert appears and that the process takes about 15 minutes. If descaling is repeatedly deferred, the machine can stop normal use after the remaining-use countdown is exhausted.
Milk-system cleaning remains a separate task, so completing the steam-wand cleaning routine does not clear a descale requirement.
What changes on De'Longhi machines?
De'Longhi places strong emphasis on water hardness, the machine prompt and the exact model procedure.
The La Specialista Opera EC9555.M support centre provides a dedicated descaling guide for that model. The Eletta Explore ECAM450.55.G support centre also provides version checked instructions, and Magnifica Evo Next has its own Australian support centre.
That is the safer route than applying a Dedica or older ECAM procedure to a current machine that has different menus, rinse stages or removable parts.
For automatic machines, keep brew-unit and milk-system care separate from descaling. Scale is a water-system problem; washing the grounds container or rinsing the brew unit does not remove it.
What about the Ninja Luxe Café Premier?
Ninja Australia's current Luxe Café Premier package includes descaling powder, a hard-water test kit and a water-filter insert.
That tells you two useful things: water hardness is part of the ownership setup, and descaling is a designed maintenance task rather than an improvised fix.
Use the current Australian ES601 instruction guide for the cycle itself. PIQSY does not transfer a control sequence from another market or from an owner video when the Australian procedure has not been verified.
Do you remove the water filter before descaling?
Sometimes, but do not treat it as a universal rule.
Breville's Barista Express Impress instructions explicitly tell the owner to remove the water filter before descaling. Some De'Longhi procedures also tell owners to remove the filter or water-treatment accessory before the cycle.
Other machines manage filters differently.
Check the exact manual before you start. If the instructions say to remove the filter, do it before the descaler enters the water circuit and reinstall or replace it when the manufacturer tells you to.
Why is the descale light still on after descaling?
Do not immediately add another dose of chemical.
A warning that stays on can mean the machine did not register the full programmed process. The rinse stage may have been cut short, the tank may not have been filled as required, or the program may have been exited before completion.
De'Longhi Australia documents this problem directly. If the descale light remains after an attempted cycle, De'Longhi says the process may have been incomplete or too quick and advises repeating the procedure with water only, including full final rinses to the MAX level.
For Nespresso and other brands, use the exact Machine Assistance or model-support instructions. Control sequences can vary even within one family, so a reset combination copied from a different model can create a second problem.
If the machine still will not exit descale mode after the official procedure, stop repeating chemical cycles and contact the manufacturer's support channel.
What if the coffee is still slow or not hot after descaling?
Descaling only fixes mineral scale. It does not prove that scale was the cause of the original symptom.
Slow flow can also come from a blocked coffee path, an incorrectly seated water tank, a brewing or capsule issue, or another machine fault. A steam problem can need steam-wand cleaning rather than another descale cycle.
If the official descale cycle completes but the same symptom remains, move to the model's troubleshooting guide instead of increasing the strength or frequency of the descaler.
Common descaling mistakes
Running the cleaning cycle instead
Cleaning tablets and descaler solve different problems. Confirm which maintenance alert the machine is showing.
Using a generic vinegar recipe
Nespresso explicitly says not to use vinegar, and other manufacturers specify their own descaler. Do not assume a pantry acid is equivalent to the approved product.
Copying a button sequence from another model
Even closely related machines can enter, rinse and exit descale mode differently.
Ignoring water hardness
The hardness setting can change when a machine asks to descale. Set it from the supplied test method where applicable.
Stopping after the chemical stage
The rinse stage is part of the program. Cutting it short can leave the machine in maintenance mode or leave the warning active.
Repeating descaler when the alert will not clear
Check the manufacturer's recovery instructions first. De'Longhi, for example, may require a water-only repeat rather than more descaler.
Assuming descaling fixes every coffee problem
Scale is one possible cause of poor flow or temperature. If the completed cycle does not fix the symptom, troubleshoot the symptom itself.
The practical rule
Use this order:
- Identify the exact model.
- Confirm whether it needs cleaning or descaling.
- Check the water-hardness setting if the machine uses one.
- Use the manufacturer-specified descaler and filter instructions.
- Run the exact model's descale program through the full rinse and exit stage.
- If the warning remains, use the manufacturer's troubleshooting path before adding more chemical.
- If the original symptom remains, troubleshoot that symptom rather than assuming more descaling is the answer.
The goal is not to descale as often or as aggressively as possible. It is to remove scale when the machine needs it, using the process it was designed to complete.
Where should you go next?
If the maintenance routine is making you reconsider the type of machine you want, read the Coffee Machine Types guide. Capsule, bean-to-cup, guided portafilter and enthusiast machines place different demands on the owner.
If you are still choosing a machine, use PIQSY Match for Coffee Machines so maintenance tolerance sits alongside milk workflow, grinder ownership, bench space and budget.
For an exact descale procedure, use the current manufacturer manual or support page for your model. PIQSY's role here is to help you choose the correct maintenance path, not replace model-specific operating instructions.
