How to Clean a Coffee Machine Without Confusing It With Descaling

Remove coffee oils, milk residue and everyday debris while keeping routine cleaning separate from mineral-scale descaling.

The problem this guide solves

How do I remove coffee oils, milk residue and everyday debris from my coffee machine while keeping cleaning separate from mineral-scale descaling?

Quick answer

Cleaning and descaling are different jobs.

Cleaning removes coffee oils, grounds, milk residue and everyday dirt from the brew path, portafilter, milk system, drip tray and removable parts. Descaling removes mineral scale from the water circuit.

Do not substitute one for the other.

Breville sells separate group-head cleaner, steam-wand cleaner and machine descaler because those jobs target different residues. De'Longhi's current support similarly separates general care and milk-system cleaning from descaling. Nespresso Creatista Plus automatically purges its steam wand after milk use but still has a separate monthly Milk System Cleaning Procedure and a separate descale prompt.

If your issue is mineral scale or a descale warning, use How to Descale a Coffee Machine. This page is for routine coffee and milk cleaning.

Check which cleaning job you actually have

Coffee-oil and group-head cleaning

Portafilter espresso machines collect coffee oil and fine grounds around the filter basket, portafilter, shower screen and group.

Breville's cleaning system separates:

  • group-head clean cycle;
  • group-head purge;
  • filter-basket rinse;
  • shower-screen cleaning;
  • descaling.

That separation is useful because a blocked or dirty coffee path is not automatically a scale problem.

Steam-wand cleaning

Milk residue dries quickly.

A steam wand should be wiped and purged according to the exact model after milk use.

Breville has a separate steam-wand cleaner for supported espresso machines, including Bambino Plus and Barista Express Impress. Nespresso says Creatista Plus automatically purges after milk use but still requires deeper milk-system cleaning when prompted or on its stated routine.

Automatic milk-carafe cleaning

Bean-to-cup machines can have internal milk channels, lids, connectors and tubes.

De'Longhi says its automatic milk circuit should be cleaned after each milk preparation using the model's CLEAN function, and the container lid should receive deeper regular washing.

Do not treat a rinse prompt as proof that every removable milk component is fully clean.

Brew-group and internal automatic-machine care

Automatic machines add an internal brewing unit, grounds container and rinse path.

De'Longhi's Magnifica Evo Next and Eletta Explore support centres have separate general-care and milk-carafe cleaning guidance from their descale sections.

Follow the exact machine's removable-component instructions. Do not reach inside a powered machine to clean moving brew hardware.

Capsule-machine routine care

Capsule machines reduce puck cleanup but still collect coffee residue, used capsules, drips and milk residue where a milk system is present.

Creatista Plus combines a Nespresso capsule path with Breville automatic steam-wand hardware, so its owner routine is not the same as a plain capsule machine.

A sensible cleaning routine

After each espresso session

Knock out used coffee grounds and rinse the portafilter and basket.

Breville's espresso-care guidance says filter baskets and portafilters should be rinsed promptly to remove residual coffee oils.

Wipe the group area and purge as the exact machine instructs.

Do not leave a wet puck locked into the machine for hours.

After every milk drink

Wipe the steam wand immediately.

Run the supported purge or CLEAN function.

For automatic milk carafes, follow the machine's after-use cleaning prompt.

Nespresso Creatista Plus automatically purges its steam wand after each use, but Nespresso still tells owners to keep the wand clean and perform its deeper Milk System Cleaning Procedure separately.

Daily or at the end of use

Empty the drip tray before it overflows.

Empty used-capsule or grounds containers.

Rinse removable parts that the manufacturer identifies for daily cleaning.

Nespresso recommends emptying and cleaning the Creatista Plus capsule container every day for hygienic conditions.

When the machine requests a clean cycle

Use the correct cleaning tablet, disc or program for the exact machine.

Barista Express Impress includes cleaning tablets and a cleaning disc and has a dedicated clean cycle.

A cleaning tablet is intended to remove coffee residue from the supported cleaning path; it is not the same as descale powder.

Clean the steam system more deeply when prompted

If milk frothing becomes weak or a clean-wand alert appears, use the exact steam-wand procedure.

Do not force a pin into an opening unless the manufacturer supplies a tool and instructs its use.

Descale separately

When the machine gives a descale prompt, switch tasks.

Do not run a coffee-oil cleaning tablet as a substitute for descaler.

Do not put descaler into a group-head cleaning cycle unless the exact manufacturer says to.

What changes by machine architecture?

Manual or guided portafilter machines

Bambino Plus and Barista Express Impress expose the coffee path to the owner.

You routinely see the basket, portafilter, group head and steam wand.

That makes prompt rinsing easy, but it also means those parts need owner attention.

Automatic bean-to-cup machines

Magnifica Evo Next and Eletta Explore internalise grinding, brewing and grounds handling.

You trade manual puck cleanup for maintenance of internal rinse paths, a removable brew unit or serviceable brewing area, grounds containers and milk systems.

The machine may automate rinse cycles; it does not eliminate cleaning.

Capsule + automatic milk

Creatista Plus removes grinder and puck handling but adds a steam system.

Its automatic purge helps after each milk use, yet Nespresso still specifies deeper milk-system cleaning and daily capsule-container hygiene.

The lowest-effort coffee architecture is not maintenance-free.

Cleaning tablets, milk cleaner and descaler are not interchangeable

This is the most important consumable distinction.

Group-head cleaner targets coffee oils and residue.

Steam/milk cleaner targets milk residue.

Descaler targets mineral scale.

Breville's current cleaning range separates all three. De'Longhi provides specific milk-system cleaning guidance and separate descaling. Nespresso separates Creatista milk-system cleaning from descaling.

Use the product and cycle the exact manufacturer assigns to the job.

Common cleaning problems

Coffee tastes stale even after descaling

Descaling does not remove all coffee oils from the basket, portafilter or group path.

Clean the coffee-contact surfaces and run the supported cleaning cycle.

Milk froth becomes weak

Clean the steam tip or automatic milk path.

Breville notes that blocked steam-tip holes can reduce frothing performance on its espresso platforms. Nespresso's Creatista manual similarly directs owners to check for steam-tip blockage when milk performance is poor.

The clean-wand alert keeps returning

Complete the exact deep-clean procedure rather than repeatedly wiping only the outside.

Creatista Plus has a dedicated Clean Steam Wand maintenance process.

If the prompt remains after the full procedure, use support.

The drip tray becomes slimy or smells

Emptying is not the same as cleaning.

Wash the removable tray using the supported method and let it dry before long storage.

Grounds build up inside an automatic machine

Use the owner-accessible brew-group or grounds-container procedure for the exact model.

Do not vacuum or wash internal electrical/mechanical areas that the manual does not expose for owner cleaning.

A cleaning tablet will not dissolve or the cycle aborts

Check that you selected the correct clean cycle, used the specified tablet position and filled the water tank as required.

Do not rerun random cycles with extra chemical.

Mistakes to avoid

  • treating descaling and cleaning as synonyms;
  • using vinegar as a universal cleaner;
  • leaving milk on a steam wand to dry;
  • inserting sharp objects into coffee or steam openings without model instructions;
  • mixing cleaner types in the water tank;
  • washing an automatic-machine component that is not specified as washable;
  • skipping the rinse or purge after using a cleaning product;
  • assuming an automatic rinse means no manual maintenance is needed.

Next step

If routine cleaning restores coffee flow, taste or milk performance, keep the process tied to the machine's prompts and the parts you actually use.

If the machine is clean but shows a scale warning or flow problem associated with mineral build-up, switch to How to Descale a Coffee Machine.

If milk performance remains poor after the exact deep-clean procedure, or an automatic machine reports a persistent fault after owner-accessible cleaning, use manufacturer service rather than deeper disassembly.

If the cleaning burden itself is changing what type of machine you want next, return to Coffee Machines and compare capsule, automatic and portafilter workflows as ownership systems—not just drink makers.
