PIQSY Guide
Best Small Tablets Australia: Compact Everyday, Reading and Gaming Routes
Choose a small tablet by everyday use, reading, gaming, storage and support confidence instead of assuming every sub-10-inch tablet solves the same problem.
The decision this guide answers
Which compact Tablet route fits best once everyday use, reading, storage certainty, gaming, pen needs and Australian support preferences are separated?
Start here
A small tablet makes sense when handheld comfort and portability are the reason you are buying.
The mistake is treating every sub-10-inch tablet as the same category. A compact everyday iPad, a basic Android family tablet and a gaming specialist solve very different jobs.
PIQSY's current compact shortlist now covers three useful routes:
- general-purpose compact: iPad mini A17 Pro;
- mainstream compact Android: Galaxy Tab A11, Lenovo Tab One and Redmi Pad 2 9.7;
- compact gaming: Lenovo Legion Tab Gen 3 and REDMAGIC Astra 2.
That is a better decision map than forcing one universal “best small tablet”.
Compact general-purpose iPad
Apple iPad mini (A17 Pro)Buyers who prioritise a genuinely compact iPad for reading, travel, handheld notes or field use while still wanting A17 Pro performance and Apple Pencil support.
Compact Samsung everyday use
Samsung Galaxy Tab A11 8.7Buyers who want a compact 8.7-inch Android tablet for light everyday browsing, media and simple app use, without needing a pen-led or desktop-style productivity workflow.
Simple compact Android
Lenovo Tab One 8.7Buyers who want a compact, simple 8.7-inch Android tablet for basic browsing, reading and media and do not need pen support, a keyboard bundle or a productivity-first configuration.
Compact media + microSD
Xiaomi Redmi Pad 2 9.7Buyers who want a smaller 9.7-inch Android tablet for portable reading, browsing and casual media rather than a large desk-style productivity canvas.
Compact gaming + clearer AU path
Lenovo Legion Tab Gen 3Buyers who want a compact Android gaming-first tablet with flagship-class performance and high-refresh display hardware.
What should you decide first?
Is this mainly everyday use, reading or gaming?
For browsing, streaming, commuting, handheld reading and portable notes, start with the general-purpose products.
For gaming, start with Legion or Astra. Their processors, high-refresh displays and cooling designs are the reason to consider them.
Do not pay for gaming hardware if the device will mostly be used for reading and video. Do not buy a basic compact tablet expecting it to behave like a specialist gaming device.
How much performance do you actually need?
iPad mini A17 Pro is the strongest general-purpose compact route here. Its 8.3-inch, 293g format stays genuinely portable while the A17 Pro platform and Apple Pencil Pro support give it more headroom than basic small tablets.
Galaxy Tab A11, Lenovo Tab One and Redmi Pad 2 9.7 are simpler Android routes. They make sense when compact size, media, family use and price-conscious ownership matter more than high-end performance.
Legion and Astra sit at the opposite end: specialist gaming hardware in compact bodies.
Do you need a pen?
iPad mini supports Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil USB-C, but the Pencil is separate.
Galaxy Tab A11 is not positioned around S Pen support. Lenovo Tab One does not support a pen. Redmi Pad 2 9.7 does not have a pen-in-box proposition.
Legion supports Lenovo Tab Pen Plus separately. Astra is not being recommended here as a pen-led productivity device.
If frequent handwriting is the main job, a larger tablet with a pen included may still be the better overall choice.
How much storage certainty do you need?
This matters because two compact Android routes have unresolved exact Amazon child boundaries.
Galaxy Tab A11 has family 4GB/64GB and 8GB/128GB tiers, but the exact Amazon child RAM/storage tier is not independently frozen.
Redmi Pad 2 9.7 has 4GB RAM, while the exact Amazon storage child remains unresolved between 64GB and 128GB.
Lenovo Tab One is simpler: the Australian model checked is 4GB/64GB Wi-Fi.
iPad mini uses fixed storage selected at purchase. Legion and Astra use fixed internal storage with no microSD route.
If exact storage is a hard requirement, confirm the destination configuration rather than inheriting a family specification.
Which type fits you?
iPad mini A17 Pro: compact general-purpose capability
Choose iPad mini when you want a genuinely small tablet without stepping down to a basic-use platform.
Its 8.3-inch display and 293g Wi-Fi weight are the core reasons to buy. The A17 Pro platform and Apple Pencil Pro support also make it useful for portable notes, field reference and more demanding apps.
The trade-off is workspace. The same small canvas that is easy to carry is less comfortable for sustained split-screen work or keyboard-heavy productivity.
Galaxy Tab A11: compact Samsung everyday use
Choose Galaxy Tab A11 when you want a small Samsung Android tablet for browsing, media, travel or family use.
Samsung's family specification gives it an 8.7-inch display up to 90Hz, around 335g Wi-Fi family weight and microSD expansion up to 2TB.
The exact Amazon child RAM/storage tier still needs purchase-time confirmation, and Samsung does not position the family around S Pen use.
Lenovo Tab One: simple compact Android
Choose Lenovo Tab One when you want a clearly resolved basic-use compact package.
The exact ZAF00091AU reference uses 4GB RAM, 64GB storage, Wi-Fi and includes a clear case. It weighs around 320g.
There is no pen support and no keyboard bundle. That simplicity is the point: reading, streaming, travel and light family use.
Redmi Pad 2 9.7: compact media and storage flexibility
Choose Redmi Pad 2 9.7 when you want a slightly larger compact Android screen, high refresh and expandable storage.
It uses a 9.7-inch 2048×1280 display up to 120Hz, weighs around 406g and supports microSD up to 2TB.
The exact Amazon storage child remains unresolved between 64GB and 128GB, and memory stays at 4GB. That makes it a mainstream media/reading tablet rather than a heavy-multitasking device.
Lenovo Legion Tab Gen 3: compact gaming with clearer Australian purchase path
Choose Legion when gaming is the reason to buy and you want a more resolved Australian retail path.
The 8.8-inch 165Hz display, Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, 12GB/256GB configuration, 350g chassis, gaming cooling and dual USB-C design give it a clear specialist role.
It has no microSD and the version we checked is Wi-Fi only.
REDMAGIC Astra 2: compact OLED gaming specialist
Choose Astra when its 9.06-inch OLED up to 185Hz, Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 and dedicated cooling matter enough to accept a thinner Australian support and owner feedback picture.
The hardware is more aggressive than the mainstream compact tablets, but that does not make it the safer general-purpose recommendation.
What changes the decision?
Is compactness a hard requirement or just a preference?
If you mostly work at a desk, read large PDFs or use split-screen heavily, an 11-inch tablet may be the better shape.
A compact tablet is valuable when the smaller body changes how often you carry or hold it.
Do you need expandable storage?
Galaxy Tab A11 and Redmi Pad 2 9.7 provide microSD flexibility. Lenovo Tab One uses a small fixed 64GB internal configuration. iPad mini, Legion and Astra rely on fixed internal storage.
If you keep large offline media libraries, that distinction can be more important than processor tier.
How important is Australian support confidence?
For a mainstream family purchase, conventional local retail and support may matter more than specialist hardware.
Legion has a clearer Australian purchase path than Astra. iPad mini, Samsung and Lenovo also sit inside more established local ecosystems.
That does not predict failure. It is a practical ownership preference.
What matters less than you might think
The smallest tablet is not automatically the easiest to use. Screen size and weight need to be balanced against the job.
Maximum refresh rate also needs context. A 120Hz basic tablet and a 185Hz gaming specialist are not competing on the same overall proposition.
Processor hierarchy is similarly easy to over-weight. A17 Pro or Snapdragon 8-class performance is useful only when the applications or games can use it.
Common buying mistakes
- Treating every sub-10-inch tablet as the same product type.
- Buying gaming hardware for basic reading and streaming.
- Buying a basic compact tablet for demanding gaming.
- Assuming pen support or inclusion without checking the exact model.
- Ignoring unresolved exact storage/RAM child boundaries on marketplace listings.
- Choosing fixed storage without considering offline media needs.
- Assuming compact size will suit long split-screen or keyboard-heavy work.
- Ignoring local support preferences on specialist gaming products.
Where should you go next?
If you want a general-purpose compact tablet, start with the iPad mini A17 Pro Verdict. If Android is preferred, compare the Galaxy Tab A11, Lenovo Tab One and Redmi Pad 2 9.7 Verdicts by exact storage certainty, microSD and basic-use needs.
If gaming is the job, use Legion Tab Gen 3 vs REDMAGIC Astra 2 to decide whether local purchase confidence or Astra's OLED/newer-platform hardware matters more.
If none of these compact routes fits because you need a bigger study or work canvas, move to the student, Android or work Guides rather than forcing a small tablet into the wrong role.
