Decision reasoning
Why the choice changes.
What you'll actually notice
The S Max is not simply a “better” HORIZON 20. They prioritise different things.
HORIZON 20 gives you optical zoom, much wider lens shift and far stronger published gaming latency. S Max gives you a built-in flexible stand and a more movie-first Dolby Vision / IMAX Enhanced presentation.
That means the more expensive model can actually be the worse fit if your projector will be permanently positioned or gaming is important. The S Max premium only makes sense when its stand and cinema-focused features are exactly what you want.
What changes the choice
Which has the better installation tools?
HORIZON 20 provides optical zoom plus wide vertical/horizontal lens shift. S Max has a built-in flexible stand but a fixed 1.2:1 lens with no optical zoom.
HORIZON 20 is better for a fixed installation that needs precise optical adjustment. S Max is better when you want to physically tilt the projector toward different surfaces or the ceiling. They solve different setup problems.
How different are they for gaming?
HORIZON 20 publishes 3ms at 4K/60Hz with specific gaming settings. S Max publishes up to 20ms in Game Mode with automatic keystone off.
For casual console gaming, either may be usable. For a buyer who cares enough about gaming to compare latency, HORIZON 20 has the much stronger reason to choose it. That should be one of the first reasons to avoid paying more for S Max.
Is S Max brighter?
HORIZON 20 is rated at 3200 ISO lumens and S Max at 3100 ISO lumens using the same standard.
The 100-lumen difference is too small to be a sensible purchase driver. Treat them as the same broad brightness class and focus instead on optics, stand design, gaming and price.
What does S Max add for movie watching?
S Max puts more emphasis on Dolby Vision, IMAX Enhanced and its integrated flexible stand. HORIZON 20 also supports premium HDR formats but is positioned more broadly around gaming and all-round home use.
If your projector is primarily a movie device and the stand solves your room, S Max has a coherent premium story. If the cinema badges are nice-to-have rather than must-have, HORIZON 20's broader capability can be better value.
Is the price step-up justified?
The prices we checked were roughly $2,995 for HORIZON 20 and $4,299 for S Max.
That is a large premium. S Max should only win if its exact stand/cinema experience is worth about $1,300 more to you. HORIZON 20 is not the “lesser” model in every dimension; for gaming and optical installation adjustment it is actually the stronger fit.
The practical choice
Choose HORIZON 20 if you want the more versatile all-rounder, especially for gaming and a fixed installation.
Choose HORIZON S Max if the flexible stand genuinely simplifies your room and movie-first features matter enough to justify the extra spend.
If both would sit in the same fixed position, the HORIZON 20 is the easier value choice.
Think about the room after installation, not just the first setup. If the projector will stay on one shelf or mount, HORIZON 20's optical zoom and lens shift are features you can use to fine-tune the image without moving the chassis. If you expect to tilt the projector toward different walls or the ceiling, the S Max stand becomes something you will notice far more often.
That is why the S Max should not be treated as the automatic upgrade. Its extra cost buys a different ownership experience. If your room does not benefit from that experience, the cheaper HORIZON 20 can actually be the more capable fit for the way you use it.
For mixed households, the safer choice is usually the model whose everyday strengths you will use most often. A family that streams films but also connects a console regularly is more likely to benefit from the HORIZON 20's broader setup and gaming flexibility. A movie-first room that rarely games can make better use of the S Max's stand and cinema-focused features. That is a more useful distinction than treating the higher-priced model as the automatic step up.
When to choose XGIMI HORIZON 20

When to choose XGIMI HORIZON S Max

Choose neither when
Choose neither if your room needs short throw, UST or battery operation.
PIQSY conclusion
Choose HORIZON 20 for gaming, optical zoom and lens shift; choose S Max when the built-in flexible stand and movie-first Dolby Vision / IMAX package matter more.
The best choice is the one that removes the bigger compromise in your actual room; a small specification advantage should not override placement, use case or workflow.
