How to Clean a Multicooker Lid, Seal and Pressure Valve

Clean the pot, lid, sealing ring and pressure-release parts without blocking a safety component or copying the wrong model procedure.

The problem this guide solves

How do I clean the pot, lid, sealing ring and pressure-release parts of a multicooker without blocking a safety component, damaging the seal or copying the wrong model procedure?

Quick answer

Let the multicooker cool, unplug it and separate the food-contact parts from the electrical base and pressure-safety parts.

The cooking pot, sealing ring, lid and pressure-release hardware do not all have the same cleaning rules. Wash only the parts the exact manual identifies as removable or dishwasher safe, keep the electrical base out of water, and make sure every pressure-release path is clean, correctly fitted and free to move before pressure cooking again.

That last point matters more than making the cooker look spotless.

Breville's Fast Slow GO manual tells owners to inspect the pressure-release valve cover and pressure safety valve for food or oil residue, and to make sure the safety valve moves freely after cleaning. Instant Pot Australia treats the sealing ring, steam-release valve, float valve and anti-block shield as model-specific safety/service parts. Ninja SmartLid systems add an air-fry/heating section, so their lid care cannot simply be copied from a pressure-only cooker.

Check which parts your cooker actually has

Inner cooking pot

This is usually the easiest part to clean, but material still matters.

Breville Fast Slow GO uses a removable stainless-steel bowl that can be dishwasher washed, although Breville also recommends hot soapy water and a mild detergent.

Instant Pot Duo Plus uses a stainless-steel inner pot.

Ninja SmartLid OL650 uses a ceramic-coated cooking pot and Cook & Crisp basket, so abrasive treatment that might seem harmless on stainless steel is not the right default for every multicooker.

Sealing ring or gasket

The silicone ring is part of the pressure seal, not just a removable rubber trim.

Inspect it for cracking, tearing, distortion or poor seating.

Breville says a damaged silicone gasket should not be used and specifies replacement on its own schedule. Instant Pot Australia describes the sealing ring as an integral part of the safety mechanism and sells exact-size rings for the 8L Duo Plus.

Do not substitute a ring because it appears to fit.

Steam- or pressure-release parts

Names differ between brands: pressure-release valve, steam-release valve, valve cover, anti-block shield, float valve or safety valve.

The purpose is similar: pressure and steam must move through the system as designed.

If the exact manual says a part is removable for cleaning, remove and refit it as instructed. Do not disassemble a valve farther than the manufacturer permits.

Condensation collector

Some pressure cookers use a small rear collector for water that condenses around the lid.

Empty and clean it before residue becomes sticky or develops odour.

Crisping lid or heating area

Hybrid multicookers add a second maintenance problem.

Ninja SmartLid OL650 combines pressure cooking with air frying and SteamCrisp functions. That means the lid contains heating/airflow hardware as well as pressure components.

Treat fixed heating and fan areas as appliance components, not sink-safe cookware.

A safe cleaning routine

1. Depressurise completely, switch off and cool

Never start cleaning while the cooker is under pressure or while the lid and pot are still hot.

If the lid will not open, do not force it.

Pressure cookers use locks specifically to prevent opening while internal pressure remains.

2. Remove the inner pot and loose accessories

Wash the pot, rack, basket or trivet using the exact model guidance.

Use soft cloths or non-abrasive sponges unless the manual explicitly permits something stronger.

Dry the underside of the pot before returning it to the base. Moisture or food residue beneath the pot can interfere with correct contact on models that use a base temperature sensor.

3. Remove and inspect the sealing ring

If the manual allows owner removal, take the ring out carefully.

Wash it using the supported method, rinse and dry it, then inspect the entire circumference.

Breville Fast Slow GO says its silicone gasket can be washed in warm soapy water and on the top rack of a dishwasher. It also tells owners to check that the gasket remains flexible and is not cracked or torn.

Instant Pot's exact replacement guidance is different: use the correct approved sealing ring for the size/model.

4. Clean the underside of the lid

Food foam, oil and condensation can collect around the lid, ring holder and pressure components.

Breville tells Fast Slow GO owners to use a wet soapy sponge or cloth on the inside of the lid and to remove oil residue where necessary.

Avoid forcing liquid into electrical sections on models whose lids contain heating or control hardware.

5. Check the pressure-release path

Inspect the release valve, valve cover, float area or anti-block component identified by your manual.

Breville specifically tells owners to keep its pressure-release valve cover clean and free of food/liquid and to check and clean the pressure safety valve so it moves smoothly.

Instant Pot sells the 8L Duo Plus steam-release valve, float valve, silicone cap and anti-block shield as exact service parts.

If a passage is blocked, use only the manufacturer's approved cleaning method. Do not enlarge a hole or poke an unknown valve with a metal object.

6. Dry and reassemble carefully

The sealing ring must sit evenly in its holder.

Any removable valve cover or shield must return to its intended position.

The inner pot and appliance connector areas should be dry.

A cooker that is clean but incorrectly reassembled is not ready for pressure cooking.

What changes with hybrid pressure + air-fry multicookers?

A SmartLid-style multicooker has both pressure-cooking and hot-air hardware.

That can mean:

  • more fixed lid surfaces to wipe;
  • grease near a heating or fan area;
  • a silicone ring that still needs pressure-safe seating;
  • a coated cooking pot or crisp basket that should not be aggressively scoured.

Ninja Australia lists dishwasher-safe components for OL650, but that does not mean the complete lid or cooker base belongs in a dishwasher.

Use the OL650 manual for the exact removable parts and any supported steam-clean or lid-cleaning process.

What if the silicone ring smells?

Silicone can retain strong food odours even when it is clean.

Breville explicitly permits dishwasher cleaning and gives model-specific odour-removal guidance for its Fast Slow GO gasket. Instant Pot sells colour-coded replacement-ring packs partly to let owners separate sweet/dairy and savoury use.

Odour alone does not prove the ring is unsafe.

Damage, loss of fit, cracking or a pressure-sealing problem matters more.

When should you replace the sealing ring?

Follow the exact manufacturer interval and condition check.

Instant Pot Australia recommends replacement of its sealing rings on a stated interval and warns against unapproved third-party rings.

Breville Fast Slow GO gives its own replacement interval.

Do not turn either into a universal rule for every multicooker.

Common problems after cleaning

Steam leaks around the lid

Stop the pressure cycle and use the model's troubleshooting instructions.

Check whether the sealing ring is fully fitted, damaged or twisted.

Do not try to hold the lid closed or defeat the locking system.

The cooker will not reach pressure

A dirty or incorrectly seated seal is one possibility, but so are insufficient liquid, a release valve in the wrong position or a lid that is not locked.

Cleaning is only one part of the fault tree.

The pressure valve looks loose

Some valve designs are meant to have movement.

Do not tighten, bend or modify a release valve because it feels different from another brand.

Food has dried inside a valve area

Use the manual's removable-part cleaning process.

If residue cannot be removed without dismantling a non-user-serviceable component, stop and use manufacturer support.

The inner pot has marks or scale

Food residue, heat discolouration and mineral deposits are different problems.

Use only the exact model's supported cleaning method. Breville even specifies a model-specific vinegar/water process for scale in its stainless bowl; that is not a universal pressure-cooker recipe.

Mistakes to avoid

  • immersing the electrical base;
  • cleaning while the cooker is pressurised or hot;
  • using steel wool on coated parts;
  • treating all removable-looking valves as owner-serviceable;
  • using a third-party sealing ring because the diameter looks right;
  • running a pressure cycle with a torn or poorly seated gasket;
  • forcing a lid that will not unlock;
  • copying a cleaning chemical or disassembly sequence from another brand.

Next step

If the cooker is clean, correctly reassembled and reaches pressure normally, the maintenance job is complete.

If steam escapes around the lid, the locking system behaves abnormally, the pressure-release path will not clear or the sealing ring is damaged, stop pressure cooking and use the manufacturer support route.

If you are comparing replacement systems because lid complexity or maintenance has become the real ownership problem, return to Multicookers and compare pressure-only, pressure-plus-crisp and one-lid architectures with cleaning workload in mind.
