PIQSY Guide
Headphones & Earbuds Buying Guide Australia 2026
Choose headphones or earbuds by listening job, wearing format, ecosystem, ANC, awareness, device switching and budget rather than one universal ranking.
The decision this guide answers
How should I choose between over-ear, sealed true wireless and open-ear designs before comparing brands?
Start here
Do not start with brand, codec or a “best headphones” list. Start with what you want to wear, whether you want isolation or awareness, how many devices you use, and whether the product has to travel or train with you.
Those decisions remove more bad options than comparing small specification differences.
A full-size over-ear, a sealed true-wireless earbud and a genuinely open-ear product solve different physical jobs. Apple, Galaxy, Sony, Bose, Sennheiser, JBL, soundcore and Shokz can all be sensible choices once the job is clear. None of those brands can rescue the wrong wearing format.
If you remember one rule, use this sequence:
format → isolation or awareness → device/ecosystem workflow → special use such as travel or sport → battery/charging → current price.
What should you decide first?
What do you actually want to wear?
Over-ear works well when a larger headset is acceptable for flights, commuting, desk work or longer listening. It gives you room for large batteries and can offer useful wired source options, but it takes more space in a bag.
Sealed true wireless is the compact route when pocketability matters and you are comfortable with an in-ear seal. It is common for travel, commuting and everyday use because the case makes charging portable.
Semi-open/open-fit products reduce the sealed-in feeling but are not automatically the same as genuinely open-ear designs.
Open-ear products deliberately keep the ear physically open. Ring, clip, hook and bone-conduction designs all do that differently.
Choose the physical format before comparing premium tiers. A discounted flagship is poor value if you dislike wearing it.
Do you want isolation or awareness?
If reducing outside sound is part of the job, start with sealed ANC earbuds or ANC over-ear headphones.
If keeping the environment naturally available is part of the job, start with genuinely open-ear designs.
A transparency or awareness mode on a sealed product can be useful, but the ear remains physically sealed. That is different from an open-ring, open-clip, open-hook or bone-conduction product.
This distinction matters most for travel and active use. Strong isolation can be useful on planes and public transport. Physical openness can be more appropriate when awareness is part of the listening requirement.
Open-ear design is not a blanket safety guarantee. Volume, attention, local rules and the environment still matter.
Does your phone ecosystem materially change the workflow?
Apple and Galaxy integration can be legitimate reasons to choose a product.
AirPods Pro 3 makes more sense when Apple integration and its sealed ANC role are part of the purchase. AirPods Max 2 is the Apple-first full-size route. Galaxy Buds4 Pro becomes more relevant when Galaxy switching and Samsung-specific features are useful.
Neutral products such as Sony WH-1000XM6, Sony WF-1000XM5, Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) and Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless are easier to justify when your devices span brands.
Treat ecosystem as a workflow feature, not a quality score.
Do you switch between a phone and computer every day?
Multi-device capability can remove more daily friction than a premium feature you rarely use.
Sony WH-1000XM6, Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen), Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless, JBL Tour One M3, Sony WF-1000XM5 and Shokz OpenFit 2+ all sit on multi-device-capable routes in this shortlist.
Ask what your real pattern is. One phone does not need elaborate switching. A work laptop plus personal phone may make multipoint a core requirement.
Is travel a major job?
Travel makes weight, battery, packing size and source flexibility more important.
Sony WH-1000XM6 is at 254g with 30 hours ANC-on battery. Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) is 260g with 30 hours ANC-on. Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless is heavier at 290g but is rated for 57 hours ANC-on. AirPods Max 2 is much heavier at 386.2g with 20 hours ANC-on.
Those numbers change carry and charging, but they do not prove comfort.
Wired or transmitter-style source flexibility can also matter when an aircraft, older device or work source does not fit your normal Bluetooth routine.
Is sport or running one of the main jobs?
Sport changes the fit requirement.
soundcore Sport X20 represents a sealed ANC sport route with adjustable earhooks and IP68/SweatGuard. Shokz OpenFit 2+ represents an open-ear sport route with a secure hook and IP55 rating.
The main decision is not which has the bigger IP number. Decide first whether you want the ear sealed or physically open, then decide how much retention hardware you want.
Ingress protection and secure fit are separate questions. A strong IP rating does not prove the product will stay in your ear.
How should you compare battery?
Use the battery figure that matches how you listen.
For ANC products, ANC-on single-charge runtime is usually the most useful number for a flight or work block. For true wireless, case-inclusive battery tells you how often the entire set needs charging. For open-ear products without ANC, compare normal single-charge runtime.
Do not compare unlike modes as if they were the same test.
Which type fits you?
- Premium travel over-ear: choose this when ANC, long sessions and source flexibility matter more than pocketability.
- Mainstream/value over-ear: choose this when you want the same basic full-size job with fewer premium extras.
- Apple/Galaxy sealed earbuds: choose this when ecosystem integration belongs in the brief.
- Neutral premium sealed earbuds: choose this when mixed-device use and platform neutrality matter.
- Secure sealed sport earbuds: choose this when retention plus isolation is the job.
- Open-ear sport/everyday: choose this when physical awareness is part of the requirement.

What matters less than you might think
A longer codec list is useful only when your source supports the codec you care about. It is not proof of better sound.
A higher Bluetooth version does not automatically mean better audio, range or reliability.
A lower weight can be useful, but it does not prove comfort. Clamp, ear shape, pad design, hook geometry and wearing time still matter.
ANC being present does not establish a cross-brand ANC winner. Use it to qualify the right branch, then compare other verified differences.
A larger feature count is not automatically better value. A smart case, heart-rate sensor or transmitter is valuable only when it solves a repeated problem.
Common buying mistakes
- Choosing brand before deciding the physical format.
- Treating transparency mode as the same thing as genuinely open-ear design.
- Comparing ANC-off battery against another product's ANC-on figure.
- Paying for ecosystem features you rarely use.
- Assuming a high IP rating also means secure sport fit.
- Treating codec support as proof of sound quality.
- Buying a heavier premium product for features that will remain unused.
- Letting a sale price pull you into the wrong architecture.
