Air Purifier Smells Bad? What to Check Before Replacing It

Work out whether the smell is coming from the room, a loaded carbon filter, a dirty pre-filter, moisture or the purifier itself.

The problem this guide solves

Is the smell coming from the room, a loaded carbon/filter stage, a dirty pre-filter or moisture, and when should I replace the filter or stop using the purifier?

Quick answer

A bad smell from an air purifier does not automatically mean the purifier itself is dirty or faulty.

First work out whether the smell is coming from the room air, a loaded odour/carbon stage, a dirty cleanable pre-filter, or the purifier housing itself.

Current purifier systems handle odour in different ways. Breville LAP608 uses activated carbon as part of its three-layer replacement filter. Levoit offers Core 400S replacement filters with activated-carbon stages for household odours. Dyson says purifier filters can become loaded with pollutants over time and can eventually let unpleasant odours back into the room, which is why it recommends replacement when the machine indicates the filter is due. Shark NeverChange5 adds a separate Anti-Odour cartridge system as well as its long-life particle filter.

Those systems should not be treated as one universal "wash the filter" problem.

Check what kind of smell you have

The room smells, but the purifier itself does not

An air purifier can reduce some airborne odours when it has the right activated-carbon or odour stage, but it does not remove the source.

Cooking residue, damp carpet, pet bedding, drains, mould growth, smoke and rubbish can keep generating odour faster than a purifier can reduce it.

If the smell is strongest away from the purifier, inspect the room source before blaming the machine.

The air leaving the purifier smells stale or unpleasant

That points more strongly toward the filter system.

Dyson's current purifier guidance says loaded filters can eventually allow unpleasant odours back into the room. Breville LAP608 and Levoit Core 400S use activated-carbon stages specifically to reduce odours.

Check the filter-life indicator, replacement interval and exact filter condition.

Do not spray fragrance or disinfectant onto a replacement-only HEPA/carbon filter.

The cleanable screen or pre-filter smells

A washable or wipeable pre-filter can hold hair, dust and organic debris.

Shark NeverChange systems use removable Debris Defence screens that can be vacuumed, wiped or rinsed according to the model guidance.

If a screen has been rinsed, let it dry completely before reinstallation.

Do not assume the long-life main filter is washable simply because the screen is.

The purifier smells damp or musty after cleaning

Moisture can create its own hygiene problem.

Check whether any owner-cleanable part was reinstalled damp or whether water entered a section the manual did not identify as washable.

If a non-washable main filter has become wet, do not try to "dry it out" as though it were a washable pre-filter. Follow the manufacturer's replacement/support guidance.

The smell is electrical, hot-plastic-like or burning

Stop using the purifier and disconnect it safely.

A persistent electrical or burning smell is not an odour-filter maintenance problem.

Do not keep running the machine in Auto or high fan speed hoping the filter will clear it.

A sensible smell-check routine

1. Move away from the purifier and check the room

Identify whether the smell exists throughout the space.

If it does, find obvious sources before judging the purifier.

2. Check the filter-life indicator

A filter can still look grey and have useful life remaining, or look visually acceptable while its odour stage is loaded.

Use the exact machine's filter-life system and manufacturer interval.

Dyson's current purifier support recommends filter replacement when prompted because pollutants and odours accumulate over time.

Breville's LAP608 replacement filter carries an up-to-12-month / 4320-hour recommendation depending on use and air quality.

Levoit's Core 400S replacement guidance similarly says replacement timing varies with usage and pollution level.

3. Clean only the owner-cleanable pre-filter or screen

Use the method in the exact manual.

Vacuum, wipe or rinse only when the manufacturer explicitly allows it.

If rinsed, dry completely before reassembly.

4. Leave the main filter dry unless the manufacturer says otherwise

A pleated particle/carbon filter is not automatically washable.

For Dyson's current purifier ranges, the main filter is a replacement item rather than a wash-and-reuse filter.

Breville sells an exact LAP608 replacement filter.

Levoit sells exact Core 400S replacement filters.

5. Check odour cartridges separately

Shark NeverChange5's Anti-Odour system is separate from its main filtration architecture.

If the odour cartridge is exhausted or adjusted too low for the room, that is a different maintenance issue from HEPA filter life.

Do not confuse a fragrance/odour cartridge with the particle filter.

6. Reassemble and test in a cleaner room

After maintenance, run the purifier in a room without a strong active odour source.

If the outgoing air still smells abnormal, move to version checked troubleshooting.

What can an activated-carbon filter actually do?

Activated carbon is there to reduce certain gases and odours.

It is not a substitute for cleaning the odour source.

Breville LAP608 explicitly includes an activated-carbon stage for smoke and odours. Levoit offers carbon-heavy replacement variants for Core 400S. Dyson combines activated carbon with its particle filtration on current purifier families.

Carbon capacity is finite.

Once the stage is loaded, running more fan speed does not restore the adsorption material.

That is why an odour complaint can sometimes be solved by correct filter replacement rather than washing.

What about mould?

An air purifier can capture some airborne particles associated with mould, but it does not fix a moisture source or remove established mould growth from building materials.

If the room has visible mould, recurring condensation or a damp building smell, address the moisture/source problem.

Do not use purifier airflow as a substitute for moisture remediation.

Common mistakes

Washing the main filter

Only wash the stages the exact manufacturer identifies as washable.

A cleanable screen does not make the main filter washable.

Spraying deodoriser onto the filter

Fragrance can mask a smell without solving the loaded filter or room source.

It can also contaminate media not designed for liquid treatment.

Resetting the filter indicator without replacing the filter

A reset only changes the counter.

If the filter is genuinely due, the odour stage remains loaded.

Assuming every purifier removes every smell

Carbon amount, airflow, source strength and room size all matter.

Some smells originate from surfaces or moisture rather than airborne pollutants.

Ignoring a burning smell

Burning or electrical odour is a stop-use/service issue, not a filter-life experiment.

Treating "five-year filter" as "five years without maintenance"

Shark's NeverChange claim is conditional and its Debris Defence screens still need owner care.

Long-life filtration reduces replacement frequency; it does not remove maintenance.

Next step

If the smell improves after pre-filter cleaning or exact filter replacement, keep the maintenance tied to the machine's filter-life guidance.

If the smell is mainly from the room, deal with the source rather than repeatedly changing filters.

If a non-washable filter has become wet, the purifier smells electrical/burning, or an abnormal smell persists after supported maintenance, use manufacturer service.

For filter-specific clean-versus-replace guidance, continue with Air Purifier Filters: Clean, Replace or Leave Alone?.

If odour control is becoming a major ownership requirement, return to Air Purifiers and compare the carbon/odour architecture as well as particle filtration.
