Sony WH-1000XM6 vs Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen)
A decision-first comparison of Sony WH-1000XM6 and Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen), focused on the structural trade-offs that genuinely change the choice.
The switch
Choose Sony when LDAC, passive 3.5mm fallback and the slightly lighter travel package matter more; choose Bose when direct USB-C digital audio and its charging workflow fit your devices better.

Decision reasoning
Why the choice changes.
What you'll actually notice
These are unusually close premium travel headphones on the basics. Both are neutral-platform over-ear ANC models, both are rated for 30 hours with ANC on, both support multi-device use, and their published weights are only 254g for Sony versus 260g for Bose.
So the decision is not “which one has ANC?” or even “which one lasts longer with ANC?” Those differences do not separate the pair.
What does separate them is how you connect when Bluetooth is not the whole story. Sony gives you a passive 3.5mm route plus LDAC and LC3 over Bluetooth. Bose gives you both 3.5mm and USB-C digital audio. If you regularly plug a laptop or tablet in over USB-C, that Bose path is a practical advantage. If LDAC from a compatible source or battery-independent passive 3.5mm use matters, Sony has the clearer workflow.
What changes the choice
Do you actually need USB-C digital audio?
Bose explicitly supports USB-C digital audio as well as 3.5mm.
Sony's wired path is a 3.5mm stereo mini jack with passive operation, not direct USB-C digital playback.
What this means: Bose can fit a laptop/tablet workflow where one USB-C cable carries digital audio. Sony is the more obvious fallback if you want a traditional passive wired connection that remains useful even when battery state is not part of the listening path.
Switch when: choose Bose if direct USB-C audio is a repeated part of your desk or travel setup; choose Sony if passive 3.5mm fallback matters more.
Does codec support change anything for your source?
Sony supports SBC, AAC, LDAC and LC3. Bose's exact information we checked here does not establish an equivalent LDAC path.
What this means: LDAC only matters when your source supports it and you intend to use it. It is not proof that Sony sounds better.
Switch when: choose Sony if LDAC compatibility is a specific requirement. If you cannot name the source device and codec you plan to use, do not let the codec list outweigh source handling, fit or price.
Is battery really a deciding factor here?
Both are rated for 30 hours with ANC on.
Sony rises to 40 hours with ANC off; Bose is rated for 45 hours ANC off, while Bose's Immersive mode is at 23 hours.
What this means: normal ANC-on travel endurance is effectively level on the published figures. The larger Bose ANC-off number matters only if you actually spend substantial time without ANC, and Immersive use changes the Bose battery expectation in the opposite direction.
Switch when: battery alone should rarely switch this pair. Use it only if your normal mode is clearly ANC-off or Bose Immersive rather than standard ANC travel.
How much should the weight difference matter?
Sony is 254g and Bose 260g.
What this means: six grams is a real specification difference but too small to support a comfort winner. Head shape, clamp, pad geometry and wearing time matter more than a single-digit gram gap.
Switch when: treat Sony's lower weight as a small travel advantage, not the reason to ignore a source-workflow feature you will use every day.
The practical choice
Choose Sony WH-1000XM6 when your travel setup benefits from LDAC, passive 3.5mm fallback, multipoint and a slightly lighter 254g package.
Choose Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) when USB-C digital audio is genuinely useful from a laptop or tablet, or when Bose's premium travel workflow better matches how you already listen.
If both source paths are irrelevant to you, this becomes a much closer comparison. Both already clear the same over-ear ANC brief and the same 30-hour ANC-on battery mark, so current price and owner feedback become more important than forcing a technical winner.
When to choose Sony WH-1000XM6
- You use LDAC-capable sources and want that codec path.
- Passive 3.5mm operation matters as a travel fallback.
- You prefer the slightly lighter 254g package.
- Direct USB-C digital audio is not important to your routine.
When to choose Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen)
- You want direct USB-C digital audio from compatible laptops or tablets.
- You prefer Bose's premium travel-and-commute workflow.
- A 15-minute fast charge for up to 3 hours is useful to you.
- LDAC and passive wired playback are not deciding requirements.
Choose neither when
Choose neither when the real problem is pocketability, secure exercise fit or naturally open environmental awareness. Both are full-size sealed over-ear ANC headphones, so a true-wireless or open-ear architecture is the more meaningful change.
PIQSY conclusion
Choose Sony when LDAC, passive 3.5mm fallback and the slightly lighter travel package matter more; choose Bose when direct USB-C digital audio and its charging workflow fit your devices better.
The pair is otherwise very close on the basics. Do not invent an ANC, sound-quality or comfort winner where the current evidence does not support one.
