Decision reasoning

Why the choice changes.

The decision

Choose Philips CX3120/01 if you want a compact connected ceramic heater with Air+ app scheduling, voice control and 45-degree oscillation.

Choose Vornado VMHi500 if you value a cool-touch powder-coated steel cabinet, whole-room circulation, remote control, a 12-hour timer and a five-year replacement warranty more than app control.

Both are fan-driven heaters. The real choice is connected compact control versus circulation-and-construction priorities, not 2000W versus 1500W as a simple quality ranking.

What changes the choice

App control or no-app simplicity?

Philips is the stronger fit when remote digital control is central to the purchase. Its exact-model evidence supports Air+ app control, smart scheduling, Alexa/Google Assistant compatibility and 45-degree oscillation.

Vornado takes a different path. The VMHi500 has automatic climate control, a physical remote and a 12-hour auto-off timer, but no Wi-Fi. That can suit buyers who want more control than a basic mechanical heater without adding an app account or connected-home workflow.

If app scheduling is mandatory, Philips clears that gate and Vornado does not.

Compact carry or sturdier cabinet?

Philips' exact manufacturer specification lists the CX3120/01 at 1.70kg with an integrated carry handle. That supports a materially stronger move-between-rooms proposition than Vornado's governed 4.4kg weight.

There is one evidence wrinkle worth preserving: Harvey Norman's current exact Australian listing shows 2.58kg for the same model, while Philips' exact manufacturer page says 1.70kg and lists a 2.47kg package weight. Because the exact manufacturer specification and another governed AU source support 1.7kg, PIQSY uses 1.7kg but does not pretend the retailer metadata is perfectly consistent.

Vornado is heavier, but that weight comes with a powder-coated steel cabinet and a manufacturer-described cool-touch construction. If the enclosure design matters more than carrying convenience, the trade-off reverses.

What does “better heating” mean here?

Philips provides 900W, 1200W and 2000W settings. Vornado provides 750W and 1500W settings and uses its whole-room vortex circulation approach.

Those numbers describe electrical input and available operating levels. They do not prove that Philips will heat every room better simply because its maximum setting is higher, or that Vornado will use less electricity over a season simply because its maximum is lower.

Philips' 20m² room figure and 24dB minimum sound figure are manufacturer claims. They are useful context, not independent head-to-head test results.

Vornado's circulation design is likewise a product architecture claim, not proof of universal room-temperature superiority.

Safety evidence is strong on both

Philips' governed exact-model evidence supports tip-over protection, overheat protection and safety auto-off.

Vornado explicitly supports tip-over protection and automatic overheat shut-off, while its cabinet is marketed as cool-touch.

The Vornado enclosure is a genuine design differentiator, but PIQSY does not convert it into a blanket statement that Vornado is “the safer heater” in every household. Both products still require normal heater placement and operating practices.

Warranty is a clearer Vornado advantage

Philips carries a two-year warranty in the governed exact-model record.

Vornado carries a five-year replacement warranty in Australia.

That is one of the cleaner factual differences in this comparison. It matters most to buyers who value a longer written manufacturer support period; it does not prove one product will actually fail less often.

Owner evidence does not justify a reliability winner

The governed review pools for both models remain modest. Neither has enough mature, clean exact-model evidence to turn owner sentiment into a robust reliability ranking.

PIQSY therefore keeps owner signals secondary and excludes mutable marketplace ratings, review counts and current prices from the durable winner logic.

When each is the better fit

Choose Philips CX3120/01 when:

  • app scheduling or voice control is important;
  • compact carry weight matters;
  • you want oscillation;
  • three power settings fit your control preference.

Choose Vornado VMHi500 when:

  • you prefer a remote and timer without Wi-Fi;
  • cool-touch metal construction is important;
  • whole-room circulation is the desired fan-heater workflow;
  • the five-year replacement warranty matters.

Choose neither when:

  • you need genuinely fan-free heat;
  • you want wall mounting;
  • you require independent evidence proving one is quieter, faster or more energy-efficient in your exact room.

PIQSY conclusion

Philips is the cleaner choice for compact smart heating. Vornado is the cleaner choice for cool-touch construction, circulation-focused use and longer written warranty coverage.

The decision should be made on control workflow, portability, enclosure design and warranty — not maximum wattage alone.
