Decision reasoning
Why the choice changes.
The practical choice
Choose the Breville Bambino Plus BES500 if you want the espresso machine itself compact, prefer to choose your grinder separately and value automatic milk texturing.
Choose the Barista Express Impress BES876 if you want grinder, dosing assistance and assisted tamping in one appliance and are happy to texture milk manually.
The most important split is not entry-level versus premium. It is modular setup versus integrated workflow, with a second major difference in automatic versus manual milk.
Grinder ownership is the first question
Bambino Plus has no integrated grinder. For fresh beans, the household needs a separate grinder capable of espresso adjustment.
That can be an advantage. You can choose the grinder independently, upgrade it later and avoid replacing the entire espresso machine if your grinder preferences change.
It also means the Bambino is not really a one-box purchase. Bench space, budget and maintenance all need to include the grinder.
Barista Express Impress integrates a conical-burr grinder with 25 grind settings. The beans, grinder and espresso machine stay in one chassis, reducing the number of appliances on the bench.
Impress reduces puck-preparation guesswork
Barista Express Impress adds intelligent dosing and an assisted 10 kg tamp with Breville's Barista Twist action.
Those features do not automate espresso from bean to cup. You still use a portafilter, manage extraction and clean the puck path. What they do is reduce two common variables—dose adjustment and tamping consistency—for a buyer who wants hands-on espresso with more structure.
Bambino Plus does not provide that assistance. Your grinder, dosing process and tamping technique become more important parts of the setup.
Bambino Plus is the easier milk machine
Bambino Plus includes automatic milk texturing with three temperature and three texture settings, plus a manual option.
Barista Express Impress uses a manual steam wand.
This can reverse the buying decision for a milk-heavy household. If you want assistance on the coffee side but are happy to learn milk texturing, the Express Impress workflow is coherent. If milk consistency is the part you least want to learn, Bambino Plus may be the easier daily machine even though its coffee preparation is more modular.
Both use a 54 mm portafilter and an 18 g dose target
The two machines are closer on the brewing format than their exteriors suggest. Both use Breville's 54 mm portafilter architecture and the current product records reference an 18 g dose target.
That means the real choice is not “real espresso versus simplified espresso”. Both are portafilter machines. The distinction lies in where grinding, dosing assistance and milk automation happen.
Footprint depends on whether you count the grinder
Bambino Plus measures 19.5 W × 32 D × 31 H cm.
Barista Express Impress measures 33 W × 38 D × 41 H cm.
As a single appliance, Bambino is much narrower and shorter. But a separate grinder uses additional width and may need vertical hopper clearance.
For a tight bench, measure the planned Bambino plus grinder configuration. For buyers who dislike appliance sprawl, the larger single-body Express Impress can still be the cleaner physical solution.
Heat-up is not the whole speed story
Bambino Plus uses Breville's stated three-second ThermoJet heat-up.
Barista Express Impress is built around a different Thermocoil/PID architecture and the current canonical record does not use a directly comparable heat-up number.
PIQSY therefore does not declare Bambino the universally faster morning machine. With Bambino, the separate grinder and manual puck preparation can dominate total preparation time. With Express Impress, the integrated grinder and dosing/tamping assistance can reduce setup friction even if its heating architecture is different.
Cleaning and maintenance split across one or two appliances
Bambino Plus requires normal espresso-machine cleaning plus grinder maintenance on the separate grinder. Its automatic steam wand reduces milk-texturing intervention but still needs wiping and purge care.
Barista Express Impress concentrates grinder and espresso maintenance in one machine. The integrated grinder still needs hopper/burr/chute attention, while the manual steam wand needs immediate wiping and purging after milk use.
Neither is low-maintenance in the way a simple capsule machine is.
When each product is the better fit
Choose Bambino Plus if
- you already own a suitable espresso grinder, or want to choose one independently;
- automatic milk is important;
- the espresso machine itself must be compact;
- you like a modular setup that can be upgraded piece by piece;
- you accept more responsibility for dosing and tamping.
Choose Barista Express Impress if
- you want one appliance for grinding and espresso preparation;
- dosing feedback and assisted tamping are valuable;
- manual milk texturing is acceptable or desirable;
- you prefer less appliance sprawl;
- the 33 × 38 × 41 cm body fits comfortably on your bench.
Cost should be compared as a complete setup
Bambino Plus can look cheaper when only the machine is counted, but a capable grinder is part of the real fresh-bean system unless you already own one.
Barista Express Impress bundles the grinder into the machine, but that integration also means future grinder upgrades are less modular.
PIQSY therefore treats current retail price as a late-stage commerce filter. The durable comparison is separate machine + grinder versus integrated grinder + guided puck preparation.
PIQSY conclusion
Choose Bambino Plus when you want a compact, modular fresh-bean setup and automatic milk. Choose Barista Express Impress when the integrated grinder and assisted puck workflow matter more than automatic milk.
If you already own a good grinder, Bambino becomes especially compelling. If you do not want to research or accommodate a second appliance, Express Impress is the more coherent first all-in-one setup.
