Decision reasoning

Why the choice changes.

What you'll actually notice

The GV50 feels like a portable projector that happens to be easy to aim. The Freestyle feels more like a Samsung smart screen that happens to project.

That is why the built-in battery difference matters so much. GV50 can run away from the wall socket as part of the standard package. The Freestyle is easy to move and rotate, but cable-free use requires the optional Battery Base. If you regularly carry the projector into a bedroom, backyard or another room without convenient power, BenQ's approach is more complete out of the box.

Samsung fights back with its familiar smart-TV experience and Gaming Hub. If you already live inside Samsung's ecosystem and mostly use the projector near power, that convenience can matter more than having a battery built in.

What changes the choice

Do you need battery power without buying another accessory?

GV50 includes a built-in battery. Samsung's Freestyle is easy to move but the Battery Base is sold separately.

If cable-free use is one of the reasons you are buying a portable projector, that difference is fundamental. If you mainly move between rooms with nearby sockets, Samsung's lack of an internal battery may not matter.

Which design is better for casual aiming?

Both are built around flexible projection. GV50 uses a rotating body aimed heavily at bedroom and ceiling viewing. Freestyle uses a 180-degree rotating design with automatic focus and keystone.

The better fit depends on the room rather than a universal winner. GV50 feels more like a portable projector engineered for flexible viewing; Freestyle feels more like a Samsung smart screen that happens to project.

Which smart system matters more?

GV50 uses Google TV. Freestyle uses Samsung's smart-TV system and includes Gaming Hub for supported cloud-gaming services.

If your household already uses Samsung TVs and apps, Freestyle can feel familiar. If Google TV and its app ecosystem are your preference, GV50 is simpler. system preference is more meaningful here than small specification differences because both products are convenience-led.

What about image resolution and brightness?

Both are Full HD. GV50 has a verified 500 ANSI-lumen manufacturer figure, while the current staged Australian Freestyle evidence does not give PIQSY a brightness figure strong enough to use as a like-for-like decision claim.

That uncertainty means We would not call Samsung brighter or dimmer. If brightness is central to your purchase, GV50 is easier to assess from the evidence we have.

Which is better value?

Freestyle's price we checked is around $888, substantially below many premium portables. GV50's value case depends on its built-in battery, audio and bedroom-friendly chassis.

If you do not need cable-free operation, Samsung can be the cheaper lifestyle route. If you would add Samsung's Battery Base and extra audio anyway, the gap narrows and GV50's integrated package becomes easier to justify.

The practical choice

Choose GV50 when you want one box to handle portable picture, battery, Google TV and stronger built-in audio.

Choose Freestyle 2nd Gen when the Samsung interface, Gaming Hub and lower entry price are the things you care about — and you do not mind using mains power most of the time.

If you would immediately add Samsung's battery accessory and extra audio, compare the total cost rather than just the projector price.

Think about the accessories you would actually add. If the Freestyle needs its Battery Base and another speaker to match how you plan to use the GV50, compare the complete setups rather than the shelf prices. If it will stay plugged in and Samsung's apps already cover your household, the simpler Freestyle package can still make good sense.

Gaming can also mean different things here. Samsung's Gaming Hub is useful if cloud gaming is part of your routine, but it should not sway the decision if you mainly plug in a console. In that case, the bigger ownership difference is still power and portability: the GV50 includes the battery in the projector itself, while the Freestyle remains a mains-powered lifestyle screen unless you add the separate battery accessory.

When to choose BenQ GV50

  • Built-in battery is non-negotiable.
  • Bedroom/ceiling projection is the main use.
  • You prefer Google TV and stronger integrated audio.

When to choose Samsung The Freestyle 2nd Gen

  • Samsung Gaming Hub and Smart Experience matter.
  • You usually have mains power nearby.
  • Lower upfront price matters more than a built-in battery.

Choose neither when

Choose neither if you want native 4K or a projector intended for larger mixed-light living rooms.

PIQSY conclusion

GV50 is the stronger self-contained portable; Freestyle 2nd Gen makes more sense if Samsung's smart system, Gaming Hub and rotating lifestyle design are the reason you are buying.

The best choice is the one that removes the bigger compromise in your actual room; a small specification advantage should not override placement, use case or workflow.

Final choice

Choose the product that fits your setup.
